Is that only true when you're running Reaper? If so, then you still have monitoring on in Reaper. Turn that off. You'll no longer need to mess with that.

I couldn't leave this so I got out the meds, stuff tissue paper up my nose and had a go. Even with Reaper not running I can hear the guitar, it's to do with Scarlett Mix control, I can adjust output levels in there regardless of where the knobs are on the Scarlett. The input lights still light up on the Scarlett too for some reason and I can turn them up easily enough to get clipping. I can leave them down and ignore them but my OCD won't allow that rolleyes.gif

USB from the Helix has a number of channels, both dry and wet. Record the wet to one track in Reaper and the dry to another track.

I set all Helix channels to record in Reaper, you can see the dry one with the lowest signal but some don't register at all.

Any advice?

Cheers

That sounds correct. You should hear the Helix output when Reaper isn't running. You don't want to have to run Reaper, or even turn on the computer, just to hear yourself playing guitar.

Again, that's what you want. A wet stereo input pair and a dry mono input. That allows you to record one or both.

What are the other 5 Helix channels for? The ones that don't register any input?

Those extra channels are an advanced optional feature in case you want to capture something other than the main outputs.

Remember that big graphic I posted showing the signal paths? They can be very handy. Say you want to record one channel to a track on your daw that's running an octaver for example. That way you can have a sort of bass guitar simulation in real time as you play or as you play back from reaper and add solo tracks.

Thanks Todd,

Ok, I've got my XLR cables, when I get home I'll get then into the system. Should I set the input to instrument, line or pad on the Scarlett?

Cheers

Ok job done,

Guitar into Helix LT, Helix LT XLR L/R outs into Scarlett 1&2, mono (L) 1/4 out into Twin City, Twin City split to Peavey return and/or Trio + (I haven't hooked Trio+ up to Scarlett yet). The Helix LT sounds awesome through the Peavey and Celestion Vintage 30 cab.

So recording via USB, all monitoring via Scarlett with amp and Trio+ for fun and jamming.

All I need to know is should the Scarlett XLR inniskilling be set to line or instrument? I don't want to damage anything.

Cheers

Well, since you are running line outs in to it, I'd say set it to line smile.gif INSTRUMENT is for when you are running an instrument, like a guitar, straight in.

Thanks Todd,

I didn't know if line was for something like a low output device and I thought maybe the Helix would be high output. I'm completely out of my depth with that sort of thing.

What is "pad" for? I can set pad on inputs 1 and 2 whether I have instrument or line switched on.

Cheers

Phil

A big thank you all of you that helped me out with this.

My new setup is working a treat and I have taken out some cables altogether. All paths are much more straight forward and I can not go into my Peavey valve head in an instant. Before this, the Trio + had to be permanently switched on because my guitar signal went through it, all six 1/4 sockets were in use rolleyes.gif

Here's a picture of my desktop pedalboard. Do you know of anyone that makes small angled pedalboards like this? This is an inverted plastic shelf off a wall at work, it's a bit flimsy and could do with being long enough to get the Twin-City on.

Below the desk is the Helix LT and the foot controller for the Trio +

Looking forward to my new workflow smile.gif

It works well for what I've got on it, easy reach and not having to switch on and off very often like effects pedals

I used to keep one of my pedal boards on the desktop as well. It's very handy for being able to change settings without having to reach all the way to the floor smile.gif The only thing I keep on the floor is the wah. These days I keep my pedal board on top of my 4x12. You can get a small angled pedalboard at any online music vendor.

BTW: "PAD" typically means a switch for gain reduction. E.g. 10db pad would switch on 10db of gain reduction for an incoming signal. smile.gif

Good question smile.gif The word 'pad' in audio is derived from Passive Attenuation Device. 'Passive' refers to an electronic circuit that requires no power to operate. 'Attenuation' means making the level of the signal smaller. Make sense? Then again, there could be someone from the Audio Engineering Society here at GMC with a better definition or even who wrote the white paper on the original word, who knows? If anyone has a better idea, please share!

I have a question. I've been meaning to ask for a while.

My Helix feed to my Focusrite is via XLR. This is how I hear my guitar through my speakers, (recording feed is via Helix USB and I can't hear that). Now this isn't really a problem, I just want to understand it. The volume knob on the Scarlett controls total output of everything, The Scarlett Mix Control can control individual things like the XLR volume.

My question is, why can I hear my guitar when the input knobs on the Scarlett XLR sockets are turned all the way down??? The guitar gets louder when I turn them up but I would expect that but I wouldn't expect sound to come through when they are turned down.

Thanks

Phil. Apologies for being a numpty huh.gif laugh.gif
