Quick Licks #31 4 NOTE PER STRING TAPPING WITH TRAVERSE
INTRO:
FOUR NOTES PER STRING TAPPING!!! This is NOT the standard VanHalen tapping bit. We are going to be using an OPEN STRING here and traversing all the way down and back up the strings. So your MUTING is going to be very very important. If you are not used to striking and pulling off with the first finger, now is your chance!

Once you get that, the rest is easy! Just hammer on with the left hand for the rest of the notes. It's the same patter on every string so you can focus on your technique and not hand position.

Your muting will be needed with both hands. You will need to mute with the right hand using the palm and the left hand using the fingers. Try to mute any strings that are not being played This is a great workout for your muting and will help you a bunch in other licks that require string traverse with clean mute.

*Make sure to watch the vid, don't skip it and just look at the tab, the tab is just where to put your fingers, not the lesson.

*NOTE: Keep your mute so that you don't get string noise. Use both hands to mute!

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
This is a stand alone drill/lick. It's meant to be played by itself as it's not really a scale. It's for practicing your tapping and muting using an open string and traverse.

BTW:
Please let me know if you have any questions about this lick, send me a PM if you like or post here. I'm happy to help!

YOU CAN DO THIS PHILL!! Just go one string at a time to work out the muting. I realize this is a new thing for you and for many people. It's not every day that you try to hammer through every string on the instrument. It will prep you for killer licks that use long runs of tapping over all the strings.

I know this one is a challenge. But I have faith in your guys! You can get this muting thing down and not be one of those guys that wraps a sock around the neck when recording solos!!

NICE!!! You clearly have put in some time and effort here. This is NOT an easy bit and is prone to WADS of string noise. You have a very good grasp of the muting all the way up until the last two strings on the ascent. Going down works great, and you are doing great coming back up right until the B string and High E. At this point, you no longer have the fretting hand to help mute things as it's all the way on the high strings. So at this point you have to shift the picking hand to try to mute all of the strings below the B. Take a look at my right hand position during the slow version on the demo. Notice how it shifts up just a pinch?

Give this a shot and give this one more go and you've got it!!! Congrats this is a very tough bit!

Hello Todd,

Here's another go, there is a weird sound issue for the first couple of strings. It was worse on the previous take see HERE because its not on the soundcloud version without the front and back trails cut off.

If you can't use it I'll try again tomorrow.

Cheers buddy

By the time you hit 15 seconds, I only hear the TAP from the right hand, not the TAP/PULL OFF. It could be related to the wonky thing going on with your signal. I posted in that thread on some things to try. Basically, start a new project, only use one device for audio (e.g. scarlett in and out to computer) and set sample rate manually in device and project. That should sort it smile.gif hopefully!

Something is also sapping some of your gain out which may be why I can't hear the pull off with the right hand. The first one is the best take so far, but it could be because of this wonky sound issue.

Thanks Todd,

That take was done in exactly the same Reaper project as the last one so it is very odd. Same Helix settings too. I also noticed the gain thing. In fact I turned the gain up on the amp in Helix. Hopefully it will be sorted for next time. Only thing different is that's my RG1570 instead of my Strat.

Hardest Quick Lick so far tongue.gif

Cheers

Phil

Another attempt mate, I think it will be a long long time before I get complete silence on the unused strings.

Please advise. Cheers

First, let me say WELL DONE in simply have the stones to attack this lick and make it your own!! You are the ONLY One to even give this lick a try. Granted, when played at speed, this lick is going to sound a pinch intimidating and perhaps throw folks for a bit of a loop. Not so with you! You dove right in and started earning it. Nice!
On to the review. PROGRESS!!! You did a much better job this time not only with the STRIKE/PULL with the first finger on the right hand, but also did a better job on the muting using both hands. This is the tricky bit of this entire thing to be sure. But, it's well worth working on as it's a skill that you will follow around for the rest of your days on this rock as circle the sun. Also, for folks that never quite get this down, that too follows them around!! Being able to mute all the strings, especially on licks where you are not picking, is a crucial skill imho.
You've got the mechanical idea behind this one to be sure! Just keep it up and play it at least once per practice session. This lick and that Sweep picking lick would make a great addition to you warm up routine. Don't focus to much on them, just run through them once or twice each as you warm up. Don't give it too much thought. Before you know it, you will realize that you are running both of these licks like a MONSTER!!!! for now, you just...
LEVELED UP!!!!!

The Spartan puts in yet another Solid showing. This one is a BEAR. It not only requires articulate finger control, it requires muting with both hands as the tapping creates sympathetic vibrations on every single string that isn't being hit. Also, since you are using both hands for the tapping, you don't have a hand free to mute with. So you have to grab partial mutes with both hands. This is exactly what you do here. Each string is a new chance to make a mistake and start over. You may have noticed this as a pattern in quick licks. In each one there are many, many chances to miss just one note and ruin the entire thing. This is part of why I place notes so close to each other in time, it forces your hand to jump from one to the next without any gap. This gapless/perfect playing is a great way to work on your precision. It results in being able to play, long, complex bits without error, just like you are doing here. Well done!
In other words you just, ....
LEVELED UP!!!!!!!!*You remain our Quick Licks TOP DAWG!!!! Congrats! smile.gif

Nice!! This is a very handy way to tap as it lets you take advantage of the open string. You can use three note shapes on your left hand to make it even more crazy. Also you can use full scale shapes in addition to the open strings such as playing e minor on the 12th fret using this tapping technique. Add this to your lick library! You just..

WOW!! Your tapping is on point! You have great timing on this, and your taps are spot on. No string noise also which is tough on a lick like this where you are tapping and can't use the left hand at all for mute and must use a modified right hand position to keep it all quiet. You don't even look remotely taxed by this. They say true skill is effortless! Very well played. This is a really tricky bit and you nailed it. You just ..

Look at him go! This is a timely lesson in light of EVH passing away. This is based on his work to a large degree It's taking the standard EVH tapping bit and adding an open string and then traversing all of the strings. This one requires good left hand muting since the right hand is busy tapping and so it can't do any muting. Because there are so many open strings, and so much traverse, it's easy for this lick to get very noisy, you do a very good job of keeping the noise to a minimum. Also very good control over the phrasing and tempo. You've got this sorted!!

You just,...
