Hey friends!

I'm noticing a growing interest in Improvisation. I've received 3 private messages today from students who want to focus their practice on this concept.

So I think that it's a good idea to talk more about this at the forum as well. We already have Kris Dahl's Jam School series that are essential to get into improvisation.

So my question here is. Who is / are your favorite guitar improvisers and Why? Share a video of them if possible!

Massive and very deep topic!

Just for clarification ...
Do you mean 'soloists' or actual improvisors. Improvising as in not learning a solo and then playing it but truly making it up on the spot?

A point I also bring up and explain sometimes with friends or in forums, would love to read some names who are "making it up" smile.gif

Bob Berg, Don Ellis, Eric Marienthal, Michel Camilo, Michael Brecker...

oh wait. guitar? That's a tough question!

Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Kris Dahl...

Only because I think they have a unique voice that's not dependent on gimmicks. They really are trying to speak and never try to just string licks together.

My #1 is John Scofield without a doubt - then Holdsworth & Pat Metheny.

Rock guys would be Greg Howe and SRV!

I know that there are different levels of improvisers, and that mostly in rock/metal guitarists tend to play pre learned phrases and licks most of the time.

Here I reffer to those that you enjoy listening while improvising, no matter if they are "true" or "semi true" ones. Does it make sense?
