Hello all ,
I thought I should introduce myself. I am probably not your everyday story smile.gif ..........where to begin? I am mid 40's and started guitar at the age of 8yo , beginning with chords on a classical , fingerstyle classical , then onto electric and all things hard rock/hair metal/prog metal through the 80's and early 90's.

I studied music throughout high school and , while not a great guitarist by 80's standards , I was playing Satriani stuff fairly comfortably in exams etc.....and ready to further my music studies when I graduated . Just as everything was falling into place....................NIRVANA! lol Every band/genre I loved was pretty much wiped off the planet and so I had to reconsider and went a different path. I wasn't prepared to play wedding bands.

I did some part time guitar teaching over the years but ended up doing other things for a living. I was effectively retired in my early 30's but trusted someone I shouldn't have and - long story short - back to square one. I've decided that it's time to do something I enjoy and make music my career before it's too late. It's the only way I will ever find the time to play enough to be the best player I can be , although ironically I am that busy now getting set up to teach again that I find it hard to practice.

Anyway...............I have spent the last year or so doing music studies (incl. some certificates through Berklee Online) and getting my theory back up to scratch to the point it is now better than ever. I am more than good enough now to teach beginners (most students) but the next step is to get my chops back up to scratch , which is a challenge after barely picking the thing up for almost 30 years. Even the best teachers I had as a kid had their own teachers/mentors and that is why I am here - for some second opinions and some inspiration.

I am also aware of a little weakness I have ....I am a compulsive learner and will try and learn EVERYTHING on a subject . I already have more than enough guitar courses and books to last everyone on this forum a lifetime and here I am learning more and I recently bought half a dozen Truefire courses haha. I have no issue breaking things down for my students and being patient , but that patience does not extend to myself smile.gif

So that's about it. I have literally dropped everything to try and be the best player (and teacher) I can be . The only obstacle now is myself and dealing with the long hours that come with running a one man business.

Music has always been my main souce of enjoyment even when not playing. I have put together a pretty extensive music collection (not too far off 10k albums) , mostly AOR, hard rock and metal and have at times also produced a little podcast on rare hard rock and metal.

Cheers

As far as the albums go I have been mostly digital for the last however many years so the collection is about 60/40 CDs and the CDs I do have are ripped , so operating all on digital now.

Welcome to GMC!! I"m Todd and I"m one of our Staff Instructors here. I'd like to invite you to join my SHRED BOOTCAMP where we focus on technique. If you'd like to join, just shoot me a personal Message here on GMC and I'll create your own personal Bootcamp Thread in my Forum. It's a curated series of 400 + "Missions" that you complete and then Badge Up after getting a Debrief.

Also, I run the QUICK LICKS series here at GMC which are meant to be quick and diry guitar licks that you can pick up and run with and add to your collection of chops. You can start at quick licks at any one you like. Number 1 or 100. Here is the current Quick Lick, (new one each Saturday) This is a Hammer On type lick using a single pick strike to yield 3 notes.
