I spent a LOT of time watching these Soldier and I think I've Isolated the issue. It happens when you traverse up to the next higer string from the lower string. In both drills, when you traverse up to the higher string, you often actually skip picking the note prior to the traverse. So the note before you move to the higher string, your fret hand frets the note, and your picking hand doesn't pick it. It moves to pick the note on the next string. I'm not sure if you are even aware you are doing this. It seesm more in EIGHT than in SEVEN and it seems not every time but now and then. I also notice a slight studder when you are making the traverse to the higher string. Almost as if your pick hand isn't sure whether it should be doing an up or down stroke. Also, It sounds like you are using the NECK pickup on one or both of these. That's what made it tough to hear at first.

Please don't the neck pickup in bootcamp. If at all possible, always try to use the bridge pickup so that I can actually hear the pick hitting the strings.

If you use the bass/neck pickup, it reduces my ability to hear the pick actually doing the picking and makes it much harder for me to diagnose what is going on. Once I slowed the playback down to .5 percent, I was able to see that your picking hand was skipping out on picking the note prior to the traverse. This is an Alternate Picking drill that starts with a down stroke. Unless otherwise noted, ALL picking drills will start with a down stroke.

I must take issue with my own efforts here soldier as I'm looking at the NUMBER SEVEN tablature and it doesn't have any pick notation on it. I'm going to re do the tablature for this one and place it here in this post and have it replaced in the BOOTCAMP section as well. I also noticed that when I click on DOWNLOAD TAB that nothing seems to download. This too will be fixed. Also, I notice it looks like you are playing on the wrong strings for mission EIGHT, but we will get there as we go. First, let's work on MISSION SEVEN.

Try this one more time and do it a bit more slowly. Follow these instructions.

1.)Use the Bridge pickup, always.
2.)Try to play along with a metronome if possible. If it's not possible we will work around it.
3.)Use strict alternate picking. Start with downstroke, then up stroke, etc.
4.)Pick every single note.
5.)Slow down a bit. Speed is less important here than precision.

Don't worry about moving this one up and down the fretboard for now soldier, just play it in one place. Let's sort this one out and then see where we are.

Onward!!

This is perfect Soldier! You've been doing great. It's only natural to want to push the speed. After all this is "Shred Bootcamp" so it's only natural to want to SHRED! This is well played and your form is very solid. Your form is good here and your playing in synch with the beat. This is the foundation of shredding. At this point, it's just a matter of repetition. The more often you can play in a precise and controlled manner, the quicker you will find yourself shredding.

You are ready for the next challenge Soldier!

You just...

This is played perfect but are you using the NECK Pickup again? It sounds like the neck pickup. The reason I always ask for the bridge pickup is that the neck pickup is too muddy on every guitar and doesn't let me hear the pick strikes. It's a small oversight and I don't mind pointing the right way back. Just to restate it, Please NEVER USE THE NECK PICKUP IN BOOTCAMP. Ok Soldier?? Your playing is getting better! I just can't hear your picking if you use the neck pickup.

Hay Todd ..... i'm using the bridge pickup as you can see in the picture! .. the switch knob is just below the volume knob when i use the neck! And this is not the case! ... i really do what you ask !! ... which maybe it is .. I have a high degree of TINNITUS! .. that is why I cannot tolerate treble .. and it will turn off! ... see photo! if this is too difficult for you to judge .. well then maybe I should just stop ?? ... because otherwise .. it seems like I don't want to listen to you .. which is certainly not ...... I see what I think is happening now smile.gif It switches to the neck pickup about 22 seconds in and the still image shows the neck pickup. I do see in the video you start on the BRIDGE so we are on the same page.

You are playing it perfectly and it's exactly on the click. This one is sorted! smile.gif Well done Soldier!

You have very solid techinique here and your picking is improving each time. Thanks for sharing your patch/preset info as well so I can see what we have going on smile.gif Just to try it, see if you can add the Green Tube Screamer before the marshall head. Turn the gain/distortion on the tube screamer to zero and turn the volume on the tube screamer all the way up. Also turn the tone knob on the tube screamer all the way up. This should clean boost the marshall and give us a little more bite on the signal which will let me hear more of your pick strikes. Also on the next mission press in just a bit more on the palm mute to create more separation between notes. This is a tricky thing to do of course. Being able to keep a light touch on the pick, while leaning in to the bridge is doing two very different things at once. It's key to creating the note separation that is part of shredding and will take some time.

You've got this one Soldier!

I put the screamer in front of the marschall! and the buttons as you said is it better for you now? ... one more question ... the height of the pickups does that also play a role? ... greetingsAttached Image

There we go!! Go back and listen to this one and then listen to some of your first vids in the thread. can you tell the difference as well? This one sounds more clear and has more definition on the top end. Tone is an endless quest. please do keep experimenting with your tone! The line 6 pod software is very capable. Just some things to try,

1.)Add an EQ first in your fx chain before the tube screamer. boost the mid and treble and cut the bass back. Turn it on and off to test before and after. This is a great trick for giving signal more clarity.

2.)Add a "Room" reverb. room reverb helps a signal to stand out a bit more in a mix. try several settings.

3.)For recording solos/tracks add a delay. Experiment with how much time to use. Start with default settings and tweak to taste.

Just things to try smile.gif It's only by experimenting that we improve.

Your picking is coming along nicely! It looks like you may be using a little bit more than the very tip of the pick. not a huge issue, but very small changes can help in big ways. Choke up on the pick until your fingers are covering everythig but the very very tip. That way there is no extra pick available to go beyond the threshold of the string.

Your doing great keep it up!

I've been watching this video for most of the day and trying to figure out what I might suggest to help you get toward your goals asap!! I think I finally found it. Your pick hand is in a better position now than when we started to well done on that! It's closer to the middle of the bridge which is progress!!!! Your tone is improved as well!!! I still see your pick hand working a bit to hard and I've been trying to figure out why as I think this may be the thing that has kept you from making the progress you deserve!!

I think I've found it Soldier!!! I think the reason your pick hand looks like it's working to hard is that your pick strike location is too close to the bridge. This is going to be a little tricky to fix but we can do it!!! Watch this video again. See where your pick is hitting the string. Your strike point is right in front of the bridge pickup. At this point on the guitar, the string has greater tension as it's closer to the bridge. The ideal strike point is a little closer toward the neck and further away from the bridge as string tension is decreased and thus less strike power is needed so the hand can relax a bit more.

Take a look at this video from a future bootcamp mission. Notice my picking hand. See where i'm striking the string? It's almost at the bridge pickup. just before it. So it's further away from the bridge where the string tension is higher. As a result my hand is not tense. I barely use any force at all.

Your hand synch and mute is good here! Just adjust your pick strike point a bit further toward the neck and away from the bridge and see if it feels different. make one more vid just like this one and watch them both.

One more thing: CRUCIAL: Try to stop looking at your fretting hand. That's not where the problem is. The issue is with your picking hand so I need you to focus your eyes on your picking hand. It's ok if you leave your fretting hand on the same fret and just loop the lick and don't change frets. Your fretting is fine smile.gif We need to focus on your picking to get you over this hump and on to shred land!!!

Let me know if this makes sense:)

Well fought Soldier!! Just one little adjustment can really change things!! You are now picking more in the center where string tension is much less. This should allow you to use a bit less pressure and it looks like your picking is smoother already! It will take a bit of time to get use to picking this way but once you do get used to it, it will make everything easier.

You mentioned that you changed picks? Which pick did you change to and does it follow the four pick rules?
1.)1.0 mm or thicker
2.)No bend/flex
3.)Beveled edge
4.)Sharp pointy tip

You've got this one Soldier! Time to move on. You just..

That grey one looks to be just about perfect for BOOTCAMP! I'd say put the yellow away and don't touch it as far as boot camp goes beause it's not pointy and it's too think so it will bend a bit. Ideally your pick should be super stiff and have no bend at all and a fine pointy tip smile.gif The pointier the tip the better it will serve you. I like the grey one much more for bootcamp!

There are a few picks iv'e tried that are quite good and easy to find if you ever want to add to your pick collection.

the ernie ball prodigy picks are much less expensive and very good picks with bevel and sharp point.
https://www.thomannmusic.com/ernie_ball_eve...icks_150_mm.htm

many vendors now have thick sharp beveled picks. Thomann is a great place online in europe to find good picks. I'm always trying new ones. i have a pack of prodigy headed my way to try smile.gif

Well fought Soldier!! it's great to see you back in bootcamp and giving it your all. The secret to getting better is just to practice and you are clearly putting in the time. One can get better at any time just by using proper form and putting in the time. That's really all it takes. I was self taught and took lessons much later in life than most. I know it's and uphill battle and I appreciate your determination and grit. Let's debrief!!

Good technique here Soldier!! You are using all the tools that we have talked about so far. solid palm mute, good hand synch, not using to deep of a pick strike, not leaning too heavy on the pick, etc. Very good.

Also, this one is a FINGER TWISTER. It forces the fingers to do a very complex batter and do that same pattern in reverse.
This one mission puts many an soldier in their grave. Not you. You fought through it to victory. well done.

The only note I would have is to try to keep using less and less of the pick on the strike to make each srike as light as humanly possible so that the wrist can play for days on end at speed. You are getting better with each mission Soldier!

When you come across a mission that feels easier to play, that's a shred mission and you can push the speed. When you hit missions like this that are just complex as heck, they are about precision and control as they are impossible to play fast.

You got this soldier and are ready to move on!

Congrats you just...

Well Fough Soldier! This a very tricky riff that is meant to twist up the fingers. A tongue twister for the hand. One not bad and it falls apart. You keep it nice and tight through two speeds. Also, solid mute and you don't lift your hand at any point which is also good. For these types of licks, it's best to keep the hand right at the mute point in the even you want to lift for a split second to let a note ring out, you can mute again with very little effort.

Your picking is good but keep working on making it as light as possible. Make sure, for these licks, to just use the very very tip of the pick and pick as light as humanly possible. This will let you be able to play for as long as you want at any speed you like smile.gif

You've got this one Soldier.

Well fought Soldier! You are making very good progress and it's great to see!!! Your muting is very solid and your picking is improving with each mission. This one is about straight line speed and your adapting very well to it. Your picking is consistent and that's the entire point of this mission. without consistency it's impossible to shred.

keep it up! You are putting in some great work soldier. I can see you making killer gains. keep your momentum! You've got this one sorted. You are ready for the challenges that await!!

you just..

LEVELED UP!!!
