Normal Harmonics In Winding Roads

I've tried time and time again, but I can't get it right. The normal harmonic (where you reach over the guitar) in Winding Roads seems to not want to sound right. Do I just barely touch the string, pick it, and move my finger away quickly?

Hello Ayen!

Yeah, you should just barely touch the string and then move the fringer away. Since we're on the on the 12th fret, it really shouldn't be that difficult. It seem that maybe you touch the string at the wrong place - it must be exactly on the 12th fret (so, not between the 12th and 13th fret).

It's easier if you pick the strings, but I believe I just hit them without using the pick in that video. Either way works fine.

I also press down the whammy bar. Maybe that's the part that's missing, and makes it sound wrong?

Ah, I was touching it between the 12th and the 13th frets. Do you press the whammy bar before or after hitting the strings?

while on the subject of this tune (I consider not composition on this site to be superior), what size strings do you use? Just curious. I have played around with e-flat tuning. I use 10-46. I don't seem to care for that tuning on a gibson, but have found it quite nice on a Fender. Of course the scale of a fender is 3/4 of an inch longer. Wondering what you use, what size of strings. Anyway thanks for dropping the scale, I learned that from you. Had heard Hendrix did that, but did not take it seriously until I saw you doing it. I really think that works well on a fender, and I think your guitar is the same size scale. But I have my doubts on the gibson shorter scale.

Hello fkalich,

I’m not too finicky about the string size, because it only take one day or so to get used to whatever gauge I put on. But these works ok for me:

high E: .008, or .009, or .010
B: .011, or .012, or .013
G: .015, or .016
D: .025, or .026
A: .035, or .036
E: .045, or .046

Thanks.

I am curious about your sound, the one we have heard, as in Winding Roads. I know you have a multi effect device (different from mine). Can you tell me what you are using for effects? Maybe a little description of your echo selection/settings, and any other effect you put in there. Just a few words if you would.

Read your FAQ page, good stuff

I just love your attitude Marcus. smile.gif You obviously don't care about string gauge, in aonther thread you weren't sure of what brand pickups you have (wasn't it the pu's or which picks to use?), and I'm guessing what brand of guitar, which amp is better, pickups size etc etc etc.
You just grab your guitar, strings or no strings attached, a normal guitar or a lefty doesn't matter as long as it's shaped like a guitar, plug it it to anywhere it fits, grab a random pick and start rocking heaven and hell!

One man and his guitar, that's all that's needed for you. smile.gif

I'm the quite opposite and I truly respect your way. cool.gif

The world needs both types of personalities. Seriously. And neither in itself is better, both types of people can be healthy and productive, or the opposite.

Thanks MickeM,

Hehe… I’ve never thought of myself in the way you described, but I believe you are perfectly right about me! biggrin.gif

I try to not blame the equipment if I don’t like my sound, Instead I usually blame myself for not knowing how to play with that specific equipment. Then I sit down for hours and figure out how to make it sound good (to my ears)... sometimes it takes days, or even weeks smile.gif

Can you tell me what you are using for effects? Maybe a little description of your echo selection/settings, and any other effect you put in there.

I use a PODxt, and my preset looks like this:

Spinal Puppet amp through 2x12 cabinet.
-drive: ~ 80%
-bass: ~ 30%
-middle: ~ 25%
-treble: ~ 80%
-presence: ~ 90%
-room: ~ 30%

Screamer:
-drive: ~ 60%
-tone: ~ 60%

Chorus:
-speed: ~ 8,0Hz
-depth: ~ 5%
-bass: ~ 50%
-treble: ~ 50%
-mix: ~ 30%

then I add a hi-pass filter at about 100 Hz, and a small reverb at about 40% mix.

For the winding roads solo I believe I increased the Screamer a bit (which gives a "crunchier" sound). Also, when I've recorded a solo, I compress it using the standard "Compressor" in ProTools, plus I add a short delay (echo) at 15 - 20% mix. The delay is also the standard one in ProTools.

Hope this helps! smile.gif

You should add that to the frequently asked questions about yourself Marcus.
