I've been using NYXL 0838 for a while on my 6 string, however on my 7 string I've been using 9-54, as I've never been able to find an 8 gauge string set for 7 string. However, this company called Optima carries them 8-50. BUT they are gold plated! I've never heard of that before. They are VERY expensive. About 27 euros for a set.

I generally also struggle to find sets in 9-54 for my 7 string. Usually it's only "cheaper" sets like regular Ernie Balls that come in that gauge. The more expensive lines, such as D'addario XT line or NYXL line doesn't come in that gauge.

However, now I've come across Optima, and I'm intrigued. Has anyone tried these strings?

Being gold played I'd guess maybe it stretches better but doubt it will last longer than an NYXL or Elixir. So expense in the long term is a problem.

Also in the video, probably being less magnetic they have way less mid.s. 7 string pickups in my experience generally a bit flatter than so you'd likely also lose a lot of attack in tone too. So I am a bit skeptical...

I've been reading comments on some different videos, and as with all things some people like them and some don't. Some people say they last long, some people fear or think that they won't.

I'm tempted to try them at least. Doesn't mean a full conversion to gold plated strings of course, unless they're good and then might be worth the extra cost. Only one way to really find out, I guess. tongue.gif

EDIT: And also the problem with NYXL is that they don't come in a gauge I like for my 7 string guitars. Regular Elixirs does come in 09-52, as does the Elixir Nanoweb. Choice is generally limited in 7 string sets at 0.09 and even more so in 0.08 - only ones I've seen of the 0.08 are Optima ones.

When 7 strings were new people bought a regular set and a single, also make a search it might still be possible to make a custom set like that.

I'm sure it's possible. I've seen some sites do this.

Problem with the new XT line is it doesn't come in 8 guage, it seems (yet?). Even in 6 string. I'd like to try them out. And I was told by the local shop that they don't do single XT line strings, so I can't match it up with another XT string (i.e. one in 54 for instance).

I'll gladly admit having become a bit of a cork sniffer when it comes to strings laugh.gif When I went from cheaper Ernie Ball strings to the NYXL I felt a difference. Whether it's actually there or not, I don't know, but I feel more comfortable and confident with NYXL.

I agree they all have a character to them. Last month I used a cheap d'addario and this month cheap ernie ball's...while EB's are a touch more lively, when using a lot of gain this can be a problem. Like wounded strings make more noise when slided or when hit harder pick attack can be too nuanced... d'addario's do sound a bit more "boxy" as the tone stabilizes but that kind of worked for me inside a mix rather than solo.

This also has a lot to do with gear changes and since I'm all computer this changes often smile.gif maybe thats why after all those years still I never settled to a specific offering biggrin.gif

I've felt relatively settled with the NYXL. I like them a lot, more than I've liked any other strings I've tried. I was told the XT line is even better, but as said, they don't come in anything I want. dry.gif

Are you liking the nyxl better than the yngwie sets you were using a bit back? I'm on my last few sets of yngwie strings so it will be time to buy again pretty soon.

Much better smile.gif The NYXL are about twice as expensive as the Yngwie set though. And these gold plated strings are about twice as expensive as a NYXL set. I'll be known as the string cork sniffer around here soon laugh.gif

I haven't ordered them yet, but I might try them out next month, however it's essentially 42 euros/50 USD for the set I want, including shipping, which is 18 USD/15 euros. I'm not sure it's worth it, but I can't deny that I'm curious.

It is without a doubt A LOT of money, but I can't deny my curiousity. Some people say they last a lot longer. I read someone say about 3 times as long as regular strings. I don't get a lot of corrosion in my strings in general, like I hear happens for some players, so maybe they could last very long for me and it would maybe be worth it smile.gif We'll see, I'll probably try them next month.

If you get a set, you gotta make a demo video!

Years ago GHS (I think) used to do a Brian May signature set that was Gold Plated. I did try them back then but found they were very 'bright' sounding and didn't really fit soundwise with what we were playing at the time!!

Yes, I do hear they are bright, but I'm not sure if that is an issue in terms of cutting through a mix. We'll see. I'll probably order in about a week.

Holy smokes 54 bucks!? I can get 12 packs of Super Slinky's for less than that.
3 packs for 12 bucks at Guitar Center.

The EB Slinky sets are about 10 USD here in Denmark for one set. I prefer the NYXL at about twice that though. They feel better to me and I feel more comfortable and confident using them. Whether a set at about 30 USD would feel better, time will tell smile.gif

I think a set of Super Slinky's is about $8 at the local music store and I could probably even live with paying $10. But I pray that I never pay 20 or 30 dollars for a set of strings and feel alright about it.
