Ever Tried 24k Gold Plated Strings?

Apr 18 2021, 09:56 PM	Learning Rock Star Posts: 7.676 Joined: 14-June 08 From: Odense, Denmark	I've been using NYXL 0838 for a while on my 6 string, however on my 7 string I've been using 9-54, as I've never been able to find an 8 gauge string set for 7 string. However, this company called Optima carries them 8-50. BUT they are gold plated! I've never heard of that before. They are VERY expensive. About 27 euros for a set. I generally also struggle to find sets in 9-54 for my 7 string. Usually it's only "cheaper" sets like regular Ernie Balls that come in that gauge. The more expensive lines, such as D'addario XT line or NYXL line doesn't come in that gauge. However, now I've come across Optima, and I'm intrigued. So expense in the long term is a problem. Also in the video, probably being less magnetic they have way less mid.s. 7 string pickups in my experience generally a bit flatter than so you'd likely also lose a lot of attack in tone too. So I am a bit skeptical... I've been reading comments on some different videos, and as with all things some people like them and some don't. Some people say they last long, some people fear or think that they won't. I'm tempted to try them at least. Doesn't mean a full conversion to gold plated strings of course, unless they're good and then might be worth the extra cost. Only one way to really find out, I guess. EDIT: And also the problem with NYXL is that they don't come in a gauge I like for my 7 string guitars. Regular Elixirs does come in 09-52, as does the Elixir Nanoweb. I'm sure it's possible. I've seen some sites do this. Problem with the new XT line is it doesn't come in 8 guage, it seems (yet?). Even in 6 string. I'd like to try them out. And I was told by the local shop that they don't do single XT line strings, so I can't match it up with another XT string (i.e. one in 54 for instance). I'll gladly admit having become a bit of a cork sniffer when it comes to strings When I went from cheaper Ernie Ball strings to the NYXL I felt a difference. I did try them back then but found they were very 'bright' sounding and didn't really fit soundwise with what we were playing at the time!!
