I have a good set up at my holiday home but it has to be set up and packed away every time. Most of the time it's fine but there's the occasional time when time is tight.
Last time I tried to play along with my lesson on my Android tablet with my guitar unplugged, it didn't go brilliantly.

I thought about getting a Katana Mini and putting the output from my tablet into the aux input and using headphones.

The other idea I had but I'm not very knowledgeable about is somehow plugging my guitar into my tablet. My tablet doesn't have a headphone socket, you have to use the USB C port for headphones so I'd need any interface that allows me to plug in the guitar and some headphones and also some amp modelling software. TH-U is only available on ios.

Anyone got any ideas or is the Katana route the best way to go?

Cheers

I had a look around on the internet, and it seems you can get an adapter for the USB C to a full size.

I'd maybe go that route as well as a small audio interface. Scarlett Solo maybe?

As for plugin you can either run a VST through Reaper or through a VST standalone host program. A lot of VSTs also come as standalones these days. I do like BIAS FX 2, though I don't use it much anymore, but it has a lot of presets in the tonecloud.

The reason I'm suggesting the Scarlett is that I seem to recall that you already have the 18i8 or similar, so you might already be familiar with the series.

Hi I had a similar case of trying to record/practice with an Ipad while away and ended up using a Line 6 sonic port VX with my ipad (need to use USB C port adapter for recent ipads)

From there you can use Mobile GO app from Line6 for the tone and Garageband etc... for recording was surprising good, monitor via Line 6 interface (similar to a scarlet interface but smaller)

cost 70/80£ via e-bay, many 2nd hand as this is a few years old, the apps are free

hope it helps

IK multimedia makes a handy mobile interface that works on Android and PC. It' costs $100. It's meant to work with Amplitube but should work just fine with any app you like including THU smile.gif It comes with amplitube of course.

https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigua/?pkey=irig-ua

if you grab an old ipad your options open up quite a bit. You can use garage band as a full featured daw on any ios device. Also, even on android there are some really nice interfaces like this one that is also a full on pedal board! I have the older version of the TONESHIFTER and it's amazing. Turns your mobile device in to a processor. It's a full rig and works on ios and android. Runs about $300. It has ANDROID compatiblity and it's a full on midi controller!! It can work with your laptop/desktop as an audio interface and theoretically control THU as well. I really think devices like this are the future. The future is software to put it simply and the next generation will grow up using their phones/tablets.

Attached Image

If you do buy an old iphone or tablet, i can personally vouch for how good the tone shifter is. Zero lag, sounds amazing, works for practice, recording, even live work.

Thanks Ben,

I have a Solo see herehttps://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=62206&st=0&start=0

I don't think I can run Reaper on Android. As you can see by the picture, the setup is not huge BUT if we've been out for the day and are going out for a meal, I might only get thirty minutes or less, getting all that out and putting it all away is probably fifteen minutes.

I can leave the Solo at hand on the desk, it's USB powered so I can just quickly open the tablet and play along with the lesson or backing. I probably wouldn't want to record anything in these times so just a standalone fx system would be okay.

Thanks for looking buddy.

Phil

Thanks Todd,

I've recently donated my wife's old iPad to someone and don't really want to buy another and spend 300 on Toneshifter.

Just something simple which will basically work like a practise amp but being able to jam along with stuff. 90% of the time I'll be getting my full rig out like in the pic above, it's only for those occasional short time slots to do ten minutes lesson, ten minutes Bootcamp, ten minutes technique of the day so it doesn't need overkill, clean, blues and high gain would be enough wink.gif

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 (SM T870).

Thanks for the info everyone is helped me know what to look for.

Cheers

Phil

UPDATE.

I've just ordered thishttps://www.amazon.co.uk/IK-Multimedia-Effects-Processor-Interface/dp/B00TY2X4BW/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Irig+ua&qid=1629775408&sr=8-1

I ordered the cable with the USB C on one end too. I HOPE I'VE ORDERED THE CORRECT CABLE, the one I've ordered has the USB C as the host. Something I've never heard of huh.gif

Hopefully it will work out fine and maybe open up a whole new avenue of holiday home practise functionality for me.

I'm wondering now, if I take to it and want to use it more, keeping my laptop for times when I want to record video for Gab and Todd, if there is a way to charge the tablet whilst using the irig as it uses the same port for charging.

Thanks for your help folks, much appreciated. cool.gif

I have one of these plug-and-play devices for whenever I want to travel SUPER LIGHT.

They are less than €50 new and they sound really good!

Yeah, thanks, I considered one of these https://www.fender.com/en-GB/guitar-amplifi...2311300000.html

Hi Phil, I recommend you to avoid using your tablet as a guitar processor. It will be smoother to have an external processor that at least has an aux in to connect your tablet's output. There are lots of options depending on your budget.

Thanks Gab,

Can you elaborate on why not to use the tablet please, and also some options. Read this first though please https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...st&p=791782

I don't really have a budget, I always look at all options and my budget is set by whether or not I say "Pfffffttt, I not paying that much for that rubbish" but I may look at something more expensive than "that rubbish" and buy it because it looks worth it.

As said is only for quick practise when time is short, the iRig AU has the processing chip on board so it doesn't use the tablet processor if that was your concern. Most of the time I'll be using my laptop.

Thanks for your advice.

Phil

That the IK interface that I mentioned in my post? I saw you replied about the tone shifter but not about this one? did you see that i'd shared a vid on this one? either way, I'm glad you got it smile.gif It's the one that is priced right and works with android which is why I suggested it. should work great!!

Sorry buddy, I saw it but it didn't register in my head for some reason, it was around 3:30am when I was looking and I'd been awake since 6am the previous morning when I was looking laugh.gif

It looks about right for what I need it for. I think maybe Gab was concerned about the processing within the tablet.

Cheers and thanks. It will be here tomorrow so I can test it out smile.gif

No worries smile.gif I saw that you got the same one I had suggested which is why I asked. It looks like you found that one without the benefit of my suggestion but I'm glad you got it as it's a great unit and it's a good price!! Gabe has a point on suggesting you away from an ANDROID tablet since there is no performance requirement on android and some of them are soooooo freaking slow that audio production is a serious problem. Apple devices do not have this problem since they have very strict hardware requirements and only slight variance in hardware per generation of units. As a result, just about any apple IOS device can do audio production. However, there are many ANDROID devices with plenty of power to do audio. You just have to try it and find out. if you try it and you don't hear any audible lag, you are good to go smile.gif

Thanks buddy,

I'm hoping the UA's on board processor will look after everything and it's got aux in so I could use it with input from my Galaxy S10+ phone for MP3 input or use phone and have tablet inputting MP3.

Fingers crossed. I've ordered from Amazon, their returns policy is great so if it doesn't work it goes back.

I just hope I've got the right USB cable as its never heard about one end being the host so let's hope USB C being the host is the right way round.

Cheers

I always had latency issues when using Iphone/Tablet's to process my guitar. I also think that it's smoother for quick practice to have something like the old Pandora to practice. You plug your guitar, your headphones and you are ready to practice. There are many cheap options that work well.

This is my personal experience, I wonder if anybody else had different results.

I've had bad luck with several android tablets but never had a problem on an IOS device. The good news for phil is that he has a pretty high end tablet with an 8 core processor that is one of the best android tablets out there for music. should be ok smile.gif But proof is in the pudding. So we will have to wait and see smile.gif

I have used my iphones as a processor with the toneshifter interface and it had no audible lag. Worked great! But that was an IOS device.

Well it's here and I'm totally over the moon.

Okay, the Amplitube is limited compared to the ios version but it has enough for my needs and you can always buy any other amps and pedals wink.gif

I can put a lesson video on or a YT backing and balance the volumes and play along.

Exactly what I was looking for, zero latency, well non-detectable latency anyway.

I've tried it on my Samsung Galaxy S7 tablet and my Samsung Galaxy S10+ phone, works a treat on both.

I'm as happy as a pig in pooh biggrin.gif

Here's a complete noodle fest, no tweaking, just going through some of the presets straight from the headphone out into my Scarlett. Some are a bit ott but as said, no tweaking.

Cool!! Glad to hear it's working out smile.gif There should be a daw of sorts built right in to the amplitube app but it's an in app purchase if memory serves. The good news is it saves you from trying to run two things at once while using an external sound interface which can be tricky on mobile gear.

I had the old iRig system on a iPhone4 (yeah... that's old), and it worked as a charm! It's really a portable set up, that you can use within seconds....
And you are lucky that you have a Samsung tab/phone, I once read that they were the best in the Android world in sound treatment...
