Ok the time comes when every guitarist eventually notices little dings and dints or wear in there fret's on the neck. sad.gif My stratocaster is almost 10 years old now and it's starting to get a few little dings in the fret's .I have heard all kinds of different comments when it comes to this issue everything from ''It's cheaper to buy a new neck '' to ''buying a fret polish or refinishing kit'' which are avalible on Ebay biggrin.gif .This guitar has sentamental (sure i spelled that wrong smile.gif ) because my dad bought it for me back in the day.I dont really know if there's anybody on here to answer my question but maybe one of the teacher's has had this done before. So my questions would be have any of you ever payed to refret a guitar before and does anybody know how much it costs to have a guitar refret a guitar in US dollars? Also has anybody ever used a fret refinishing kit to restore there frets?

Thanks Shredmandan

I don't know about just buying a new neck. I know when the time comes and my baby needs new frets I will have it refretted by the best Luthier I can find.

As for knowing WHEN they need it... that is a darn good question... anyone know?

Buying a new neck isn't that costly.. also if it is a really sentamental guitar like this 1 is, getting it refretted might be worth the money i know the guitar i have now when it needs it i will definatly refret or get a new neck for rather than buying a whole new guitar.. remember its only money smile.gif

You may not need a full re-fret - that tends to be for extreme wear.

I just had a guitar (my custom) in for a fret dress and recrown, plus some other bits (new capacitor on the tone circuit and so on) and the total cost here was 90Euros. That was the charge from a local extremely talented luthier. My custom was made in the late 80s so the frets have had some abuse.

Cheers,
Tony

Maybe ask him in his GMC-board?

Don't do it by yourself Dan!!!
Find some luthier or go to nearest Music Store and ask.
To change frets you MUST have right equipment.

+1 recrowning frets particularly is not something to be undertaken lightly. Get it wrong and you probably would be looking at a complete refret. Best to get a good luthier (not sure I'd trust most techs in guitar shops tbh - but maybe I'm overly cautious smile.gif ).

Cheers,
Tony

Wasn't anything wrong with the way you wrote it Muris smile.gif, I was just being overly cautious.
