I'd be lying if I didn't say I am a bit nervous about showing you this one 😅

I have been trying to up my coding skills, as there are so many improvements I want to be able to add to the site.

Since I am a fan of "practicing by doing" - I have tried to create a little GMC game.

It's still very raw with bugs / beta layout etc - but if you want to try it out here is the link.

EDIT - new lesson added:

Checking it out now after this post.

I noticed the "Students" in the menu too. Has there been a post about that which I've missed?

Just tried it now. I had no idea what I was really supposed to do - so probably a more in-depth description needed at some point. Made me laugh though!

hehe! Well if you laughed it probably means you tapped the buttons when those techniques were not occurring 😁

And the student page is not new (added over a year ago I think)

However that is a good example of a page we could probably redesign now that I am doing more coding by myself. So if you have any ideas - feel free to shoot!

Yup, I definitely did. It just wasn't all too clear as I was thinking there was sometimes more things included. And I wasn't sure what a "Vai style slide" really was. I mean, I've seen and used the technique, but just didn't seen it called that laugh.gif

I'm sure you already have this in mind, but a link to the relevant techniques from the game would be great of course smile.gif

Awesomeness smile.gif Super congrats on coding as you go! This type of thing would have been done in FLASH back in the day but those days are long gone. Now it's all HTML5. Got a huge kick out of the noises you picked and how the score goes negative each time. smile.gif

Great idea Kris, I scored 80, not sure of the terminology though. Also when you use the "try again" option, the buttons don't come back.

I'm sure this could expand into something great cool.gif

Awesome you dig it, makes me super happy 🤩

True about flash, although it did allow some things in the early days - I am really glad it's gone now 😅

Awesome feedback, thanks Phil! So basically you you would like a smooth restart button? You are of course right, I am on it!

About terminology, you mean the text on the buttons right?

Works a treat buddy, nice one.

I'm wondering if you could do a game with three option for answers, Sharp Flat and Pitch where we could guess if the bent note was sharp, flat or at pitch? Or something along those lines?

Cheers

Very cool idea! That would probably be easier to do. But maybe that kind of thing can easily be found elsewhere? (I havent googled yet)

I have a feeling I might start doing more of these!

It needs to be a GMC though, why should we go elsewhere? tongue.gif

Hehe true, but before we can hire a full team of developers I would prioritize carefully 😅

Btw I plan to make it easy to add some more lessons for this skillZ game.

So if you have any lesson suggestions I am all ears.

For example - we could also apply it on harmony, so the buttons would feature chords and scales instead. (The current game only has the harmonic minor button)

There's lots that could be done I think but obviously it down to resources. There could be different skill levels, on a scale on 1-10 I would say the current one is 7 or 8. The player has to spot multiple things and it's tricky to just use sight to spot some of them therefore forcing the player to use their ears. I never spotted harmonic minor, I wouldn't even know what it sounds like biggrin.gif

I think each game could have a summary of what the buttons mean, some people might not know what glissando vibrato is, or a Vai style slide when if they've used the technique.

In lower level games I think things like the pitch game that I already suggested would be good.

Maybe a game called "Odd One Out" where you play the 'A' (obviously this opens up twelve games) all over the neck and sometimes play an incorrect note. In lower levels of this game you could play the incorrect notes way off, for instance a D or an E (I'm still not sure I'd spot that laugh.gif ) and in the next level up maybe a B or a G and then higher up, A# or G#

A simpler version of the current game would be good, maybe playing something slower with more basic techniques to spot,

Playing chords and the player has to determine if they are major or minor.

I'm sure there are lots of ideas that people will come up with.

It's all about developing listening skills /ear training but I think this concept is great because the player is seeing a real world piece of music being played, so it's also developing the eye to ear link so when they go and watch a band, they can use this skill to try to work things out. The eye can help the ear that isn't so sure of itself wink.gif

I hope this gives some food for thought.

Cheers

Very cool brainstorming Phil -

I am starting to feel that a ’low level’ game that combines many of these ideas into a workshop type of game could be really cool!

I think a "low level" game would be interesting too. Just very simple stuff like minor/major as Phil says, perhaps expanding later on to 7th chords and so on.

I noticed the harmonic minor, but for me it was the "Vai style slide" that tripped me up, actually "push-pull change" too. I had not heard those two terms before, so I wondered if "Vai style slide" was something else than a regular slide - either legato slide or shift slide. Or just a slide into a note from above/below etc.

I think it's great that you are experimenting with this, and I'm sure it will turn out really cool when it gets shaped and polished a bit smile.gif

Yeah it has to be a term that fits into a small button… which can be tricky

Btw I hope to have some solution for explaining the terms up next week. Thanks for the suggestion 👊
