hey i was just wondering about peoples opinions on rap music...i really like some rap songs that actually have meaning, but hate the ones that just swear over and over for no reason.(or i just like some songs that are really catchy) tongue.gif

some rap songs i like-

Crank dat soulja boy-soulja boy

Buy u a drank-tpain

we fly high-jim jones

dont matter-akon

those are some that i like...but i doubt you guys like any rap whatsoever especielly u metal fans.but when u live around people who love rap, it grows on ya.

Personally, I can't stand it. I tend to think of Rap as the stereotype most people associate it with, and more times than not, I turn out to be correct in thinking that way. However, if there is a real meaning behind it, I'll tolerate it, or even listen to it regularly. I used to actually like Eminem for a while, his songs always had me laughing pretty hard.

I don't really like rap, except for the French rappers. Those guys are great, imo! (Eg. MC Solaar)
Oh, and rap in the dialect they speak where I live is great too.

I hate most of it, but some of it I think is pretty good.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=kgTrKDsfZEk Run DMC. I really like this band.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=M5GXj1jwb1U Beastie boys are also pretty cool.

I think this is called hip hop? I'm not sure of the difference though.

Robert Randolph and the Family band is also sort of RnB I think, I'm not sure. Its alot of funk and rock in it aswell, but their latest album got alot more pop and RnB than their first.

Just like any music style, the over commercialised side of rap sucks, but that's just the same with metal (like all the metalcore and numetal). Good rap is good, and will allways be good. Sure, some people can't be arsed to get into rap, and that's fine, but it's still just as good as any other music imo.

So, yes! I like rap, allthough I don't listen to it that much, but Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Lupe Fiasco and some more hip hop/rap groups/artists are great imo!

I think as long as they don't go on about "Gangstas" or guns or money, it's tolerable.

Real Gangsters tried to make something of themselves, for their families. The ones you hear about in rap are just thugs.

ahhh the Rap subject biggrin.gif

I'm not a big fan of "rap" but I do love Hip Hop. By this I mean that to me Rap is just a sub genre of Hip Hip. True hip hop for me is guys like KRS1, Public Enemy, Common, Eminem, Tupak, Mos Def, Run DMC people who had a message and some actual talent. "Rap" for me is just club music. Some of it is catchy yes and I do like dancing/partying to it but it has it's time and place.

Well said, Dan. I agree with what you said about the WET Hypothetical (though I think a channel called WET would really arouse some suspicions, and in some cases, just arouse). But maybe we should avoid the subject, as someone might get offended, and that's the last thing we want on GMC.

Edit: Oh you've edited your post. I've done the same then, but left what you would understand.

I couldnt agree with you more i personly feel that rap is garbage and that there is no musical talent involved with the making of rap or anything that has to do with it.

As with most/all types of music I can take some and leave some.

Rap can be excellent and defy the stereotype of what we come to expect/what is played to death on commercial stations. It can have meaningful, important lyrics (albeit as Rokchik says much is arguably hiphop) - see Public Enemy, Arrested Development, Consolidated for example. It can have imaginative and intelligent production - The Roots, Dizzy Rascal. It can span boundaries - Run DMC, Floetry, MC Solaar.

It's the same as any type of music some is excellent, some is poor. Sadly it tends to be the latter that gets the most airtime though - just don't write it all off based on what you hear on commercial radio. After all if we did what would be left of metal, rock, jazz, blues - you name it...

Cheers,
Tony

Nas. Illmatic. done.

I'd like to add something in the defence of rap. if you are not a fan of hip-hop, the only thing you know about is the over-commercialized side. 50 cent, t-pain, stuff like that. it's easy to say that stuff sucks. but think of it from a hip-hop fan's point of view, as somebody who doesn't really know anything about rock music. we have Fall Out Boy. (new) Green Day. PANIC! at the disco being over-commercialized. if somebody tried to label Rock with those bands, a lot of us would jump at them and say "those bands aren't even rock / that's pop garbage / *etc*". i think the same thing goes for rap music.

so, before you judge, just think to yourself that maybe you really have no idea what rap is anyway. i know i really don't. i've been getting into it a bit, but still. i'm a total noob when it comes to that form of music. but i like some good stuff.

Me and Gen were actually talking about this the other day. And Gen said something like "All good music is good music". And that is as true as it gets.

You just got to find the good stuff! Dont say that rap sucks, say that the commercial piece of crabcake rap that is on The Voice and everywhere else on the TV is crap(well, many have already stated that smile.gif )
There are talentented musicians in every freakin genre, you just got to look harder. Well, excluding trance and techno... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Rap is music just like any other music genre. I dont like it, but i still can respect it, or atleast some of it, i have to admit, what i have heard nowadays (which i admit is next to none, so maybe i shouldnt make this an absolute oppinion) seems like its manufactured, like it just rools off an assembly line, but this is just how i hear it, to someone else, it could be compeltely unique.

To each his own.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised. They even use some real instruments ohmy.gif biggrin.gif

But yeah, as you said about this new rap thing, its just a bunch of record labels that tries to gather money on good looking artists and "music" that is "in". Its not really music at all.
