HI everyone. Whenever I solo I find myself stuck in Am Pentatonic. Does anyone have any advice on how to switch scales mid solo and what other scales I should learn next? Thanks

The Dorian scale is pretty much the same as Minor Pentatonic, just that there are adde two notes. Maybe you could try that scale out next smile.gif

Its great if you want to make your shredding sound rock'n'rollish biggrin.gif

Also I suggest you learn the major scale and mixolydian(almost the same as the major scale)

I know there will come far better answers than this, but I still hope I could help.

Hi!
To be honest I wouldn't even think of soloing, at this stage.
What I'm doing is concentrating on the 4 basic scales:
minor penta, major penta, major and natural minor. (Wallimann should prepare 4 juicy lessons on these)
Learn the different boxes, remember where the root notes are,
and play them up and down one after the other,
ALWAYS with alternate picking. (Muris said he's going to do one for us beginners)
I know it's boring, but you have to practice them,
and the more you practice them the sooner you will leave them behind.
I know it's cool to play a lick that sounds good,
but it will even sound better once you understand WHY it sounds good. wink.gif
Everything you need to know is in Andrew's Theory Board.
Hope it helped!
Cheers, Eddie

I was in the EXACT same position as you not too long ago. I practiced A minor over and over, i learnt all 5 boxes and linked themm all together. That became my comfort zone i was comfortable playing just A minor all the time. And then i decided i wanted to learn another key so i did the same with G. After that i could play G and A minor until i realised, thanks to Andrew that what i was doing wasn't right, that i had to learn all 12 keys with this scale. I don't think it's important that you learn other scales keep to your minor pentatonic for now and concentrate on learning the other keys with it. Learning 1 key first i think is a good thing and being comfortable with it i thik will help but here's what i did and hopefully it'll help.

1. Learn your A minor comfortably and learn all 5 boxes and link them etc etc

2. Starting from F, go through the entire scale and rising a semi tone each tim.e. So in other words starting from F scale box 1 which is on the 1st fret of the E string, play all 5 scale boxes up and down, once you've finished that, go onto F# minor and play all 5 boxes etc until you get to E.

3. Try playing your scale boxes and then switching to different keys at different times so you get used to knowing where the key changes are

4. Try and improvise by using boxes you're comfortable with, even if it's just one box. Then eventually ad more boxes in as you get used to them and get better at them, don't forget key changing.

5. learn the root notes so you'll become better at key changing and try and change keys in time, so you might say you want to play in E for 8 beats then change to say G# etc.

I did stuff like this and it helped me so maybe it can help you as well. It might be different for other people but hopefully this will help you a bit
