Right,
I'm just finished a study course, so I've got no real reason to do this any more. I've been inspired by Iluha's post here https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...?showtopic=7465, and by Muris's great myxolydian lesson. (Check it out here: http://www2.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-gui...oing-advanced/) I'm at the stage where I'm about 80% of the guitarist I want to be. However, as anyone who's experienced improvements in things, the final 20% is normally just as hard as doing the first 80%! But the only thing that's been holding me back is my "fingers in other pies", which has been taking me away from guitar. I've "tickled" a lot of the stuff on GMC, but never really sat down and nailed anything to standard. So no more! I'm going to be trying to put in 25 hours a week to pull my self up to scratch. Where I'm at: I've been able to include "Eruption" into my bands set. (Seriously, that was a big thing for me!) I can alt pick 3 nps until the cows come home. My theory is fine. Where I need to be: Just watch muris's mixolydian lesson again!!!  (Seriously) Alt picking at around 150 bpm, for pretty much anything I want to tackle. More 2 nps (I've neglected my pentatonics in the past few years). Legato and tapping, in an improvisational context The ability to turn the theoretical licks I've written (but can't play) into reality (by being able to play them). Being able to sweep and use write useful scalar/arpeggio licks.. ie Not just running up and down them like a stabbed rat! So I'm going to be building myself a practice routine this weekend, largely based around lessons on GMC, with other things added in for technique etc. I'm also building a list of the next set of songs I want to learn and I'm going to pour myself into it all, until I nail it all. And I'll need help. So I want anyone who's willing to put their commitments on the table, (they can be to any level). If you write it down, and put it in this thread, then we can all look at them in a month or so, and recap on how we've all done. Anyone willing to take the plunge? /T |

The last couple of months I've been fiddlin around with fingerpicking blues and slide, and like a week ago I started getting totally serious. My electric blues improvisation is pretty good for now, I'm satisified atleast, and now I want to be able to play like Bjørn Berge
 What I've learned: Come Back Baby (I play it very good I think) - E standard tuning You got the pocket book, I got the key (I also play this good, everything except the chorus) - E standard tuning Vestapol (Only some of the first parts of it) - Open D tuning Made my own song in E standard. The past week I've made my own song in open D tuning that is fast and complicated. It includes bottleneck and constant picking with thumb, index and middle finger. Also the ring finger a couple of times. I tried to make it a little similar to Bjørn Berge's techniques, though I'm nowhere near him, but my goal is to get as good as him or even better in the future. My goals for, lets say, the next couple of months: Sing and play my song perfect! Not missing strings, make it sound clean etc. I have never practiced singing while playing so I'm not sure if I will make it in a couple of months. I'm already struggling with the guitar playing because this is a really hard technique and I made the song hard for me to play so I would have a challenge. This is a great thread Tank - I have the opposite problem though - I'm just about to lose a lot of time as I move house
 I have made monster strides in my legato of late, but my alt picking has been seriously languishing. My commitment will be to spend some structured time on Alt Picking every day and see how I can improve speed and cleanliness. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

I have had some trouble knuckling down, but have finally decided I need to combine speedpicking with nailing 3nps scales. Rather than use a metronome I am playing to Dave Wallimans modal backing track to cement my modes at the same time - for modes I think a chordal reference is very important if not vital to nail the feel of each scale).
Until now I have been focusing on a few runs in my speedpicking, now I am happy with my basic technique I am now concentrating on the harder work of getting all the scales/modes down. (I can play all the modes using regular boxes but really want to master 3nps) The way I do it is as follows - I have 7 boxes to perfect, so I take 2 approaches. 1. Pick a mode (usually Ionian), set it to loop and play all 7 boxes up and down 2. Progress through the modes (looping on each and moving on after a while) and play the 1st box up and down Either way, I get to cover all 7 boxes, and mixing it up in this way keeps things very interesting. As I improve I can slowly speed up the BT. I may organize the backing track to automatically repeat each mode say 10 times rather than have to manually switch it. I need to train for a while at a slow speed (70 bpm 16ths) to get the patterns down, then I will shift to 16th triplets and start training for speed. this is initially hard for me because of the larger stretching involved on the lower frets, something new for my aching 40 year old hands!
