Right,

I'm just finished a study course, so I've got no real reason to do this any more. I've been inspired by Iluha's post here https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...?showtopic=7465, and by Muris's great myxolydian lesson. (Check it out here: http://www2.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-gui...oing-advanced/)

I'm at the stage where I'm about 80% of the guitarist I want to be. However, as anyone who's experienced improvements in things, the final 20% is normally just as hard as doing the first 80%! But the only thing that's been holding me back is my "fingers in other pies", which has been taking me away from guitar. I've "tickled" a lot of the stuff on GMC, but never really sat down and nailed anything to standard.

So no more! I'm going to be trying to put in 25 hours a week to pull my self up to scratch.

Where I'm at:
I've been able to include "Eruption" into my bands set. (Seriously, that was a big thing for me!)
I can alt pick 3 nps until the cows come home.
My theory is fine.

Where I need to be:
Just watch muris's mixolydian lesson again!!! tongue.gif
(Seriously)
Alt picking at around 150 bpm, for pretty much anything I want to tackle.
More 2 nps (I've neglected my pentatonics in the past few years).
Legato and tapping, in an improvisational context
The ability to turn the theoretical licks I've written (but can't play) into reality (by being able to play them).
Being able to sweep and use write useful scalar/arpeggio licks.. ie Not just running up and down them like a stabbed rat!

So I'm going to be building myself a practice routine this weekend, largely based around lessons on GMC, with other things added in for technique etc. I'm also building a list of the next set of songs I want to learn and I'm going to pour myself into it all, until I nail it all.

And I'll need help. So I want anyone who's willing to put their commitments on the table, (they can be to any level). If you write it down, and put it in this thread, then we can all look at them in a month or so, and recap on how we've all done.

Anyone willing to take the plunge?

/T

That's great man, hope you are able to cope with it cause that is the hardest part, since I wrote it on my thread, I'll just paste my goals here:

My Goals For The Next 6 Months

1)Learn some more advanced scales.
2)Getting to my goal speed in Pavel's sweeping lessons.
3)Perfecting Muris's Luke style lesson.
4)Hopefully write more music.
5)Hopefully get some recording gear and start to actually record things.
6)Learn a few more Classical pieces.
7)Get better at picking(I still suck).

But I'll also add -

My Goals For The Next Month

1)Learn 1 advanced scale
2)Getting my bpm for Pavel's sweeping lesson up by atleast 4 bpm
3)Finishing to learn Bouree
4)Get back to basics with alternate picking and start to work my way up slowely

Good luck To you and me and to everyone who goes with this smile.gif

The last couple of months I've been fiddlin around with fingerpicking blues and slide, and like a week ago I started getting totally serious. My electric blues improvisation is pretty good for now, I'm satisified atleast, and now I want to be able to play like Bjørn Berge smile.gif

What I've learned:

Come Back Baby (I play it very good I think) - E standard tuning

You got the pocket book, I got the key (I also play this good, everything except the chorus) - E standard tuning

Vestapol (Only some of the first parts of it) - Open D tuning

Made my own song in E standard.

The past week I've made my own song in open D tuning that is fast and complicated. It includes bottleneck and constant picking with thumb, index and middle finger. Also the ring finger a couple of times. I tried to make it a little similar to Bjørn Berge's techniques, though I'm nowhere near him, but my goal is to get as good as him or even better in the future.

My goals for, lets say, the next couple of months:

Sing and play my song perfect! Not missing strings, make it sound clean etc.
I have never practiced singing while playing so I'm not sure if I will make it in a couple of months. I'm already struggling with the guitar playing because this is a really hard technique and I made the song hard for me to play so I would have a challenge.
I also would like to learn to play clean with 12 strings.

My ultimate goal:

This is a great thread Tank - I have the opposite problem though - I'm just about to lose a lot of time as I move house sad.gif

I have made monster strides in my legato of late, but my alt picking has been seriously languishing. My commitment will be to spend some structured time on Alt Picking every day and see how I can improve speed and cleanliness.

I really need to improve my theory, learn the rest of the C-Major Scale and probably start doing more stuff with Modes to achieve different tones and moods in my playing. However, playing wise im doing great but im at that point where I need to know more in order to create the music that I hear and think about.

And this is totally random but , Go Paul Gilbert , Rock on Brother !

Well it's been a month so I thought I'll do a recap,
so this is what I achieved this month:
1)got my bpm on Pavel's 3 string sweep lesson up by 8 bpm
2)started from scratch on pavel's 1st and 4th alternate picking lessons, and now I play them both(well, their beginings) clean at 94 bpm
3)steal havn't masterd Bouree, but I have been kinda neglecting it sad.gif
4)learned all shapes of the pentatonics.

Goals for next month:
1)get me bpm on Pavel's 3 string sweep lesson up by 4 bpm
2)get my bpm on the alternate picking lesson to 100
3)master Bouree
4)Continue to practice the shapes hopefully memorizing them

Nice one Iluha smile.gif

My update:

I've changed the way that I practice. Or at least, how I'm using my metronome for a large part of my practice. What I do is set the metronome at my limit speed for the lick or passage, and then practice the lick at half that speed. So for instance if my limit is 4 or 6 notes per beat 136 bpm, I'll set the metronome there, but I'll actually be playing 2 or 3 notes per beat, effectively practicing at 68 bpm. And I'll stay like that for a good 15 minutes non stop. Then when I play the lick I'll do 4 reps at the slow speed, then burst once at the limit speed. Then back to slow. Eventually I'm able to spend more time at burst speed. Once I can play comfortably at the burst speed, I'll raise the metronome a little, and repeat.

It's something that I haven't really approached before, I would be the school of "notch" practice, where I play for a while at a speed, then notch it up until I'm practicing a large part of my time at 90% limit, trying to force that last 10%. However, this way, I find that as I'm not competing for speed with myself, (I have to go back down to half speed), I'm a lot more in control of my picking hand, and am able to develop accents on up and down strokes, which I'm able to use when I burst into the limit speed.

I'm concentrating on alt picking, so the lions share of my practice is going towards:
Pavels Alt Picking
Muris Alt Picking Etude
Various Paul Gilbert Licks

And the song I am learning is:
Technical Difficulties

My average speed has risen 10 bpm (with more control smile.gif )

So far I've learned to play the song Vestapol alot better, I learned Police Dog Blues, still needs practice though.

I only play 12 string now, improved alot at that.

Overall technique and new ways to make music have also improved.

I planned to manage to sing and play my song, but its way too hard for me atm. The singing went fine, but the guitar playing was pretty hard for me. Instead I've made a new song, wich is even better than the last one.

But I havent touched my guitar in 3 days, and this is driving me CRAZY. A combination beetween lifting weights and lots of bending and vibrato with standard E tuning was the cause of this. I havent done neither of these two things for ages, thats why my left arm and hand went straight to hell. This is the fourth day without my guitar and I think I should wait a couple of more days.
I just cant imagine how much I could have improved the last 3 days, DAMNIT.

I have had some trouble knuckling down, but have finally decided I need to combine speedpicking with nailing 3nps scales. Rather than use a metronome I am playing to Dave Wallimans modal backing track to cement my modes at the same time - for modes I think a chordal reference is very important if not vital to nail the feel of each scale).

Until now I have been focusing on a few runs in my speedpicking, now I am happy with my basic technique I am now concentrating on the harder work of getting all the scales/modes down. (I can play all the modes using regular boxes but really want to master 3nps)

The way I do it is as follows - I have 7 boxes to perfect, so I take 2 approaches.

1. Pick a mode (usually Ionian), set it to loop and play all 7 boxes up and down
2. Progress through the modes (looping on each and moving on after a while) and play the 1st box up and down

Either way, I get to cover all 7 boxes, and mixing it up in this way keeps things very interesting. As I improve I can slowly speed up the BT.

I may organize the backing track to automatically repeat each mode say 10 times rather than have to manually switch it.

I need to train for a while at a slow speed (70 bpm 16ths) to get the patterns down, then I will shift to 16th triplets and start training for speed. this is initially hard for me because of the larger stretching involved on the lower frets, something new for my aching 40 year old hands!

Breakthrough!! biggrin.gif

I've still been practicing at slow speeds. (Got 5 hours in today). Practice schedule was mixing between legato, and alt picking exercises. I was working through the modal positions, 3 notes per string, but using string skipping a la Paul Gilbert. Metronome set at 70 bpm. 15 minutes legato, then 15 minutes alt picking, trying to keep it non stop. Also, Pavel's alt picking (4) exercise, set really slowly (also modifying it by playing legato).

After a rest, I picked up the guitar, and decided to try the first section of technical difficulties. I had the metronome set to 126 (which I hadn't intended), but just gave it a go anyway, and everything just fell into place. Every note was so clean, and every run so unhurried, I'm pretty sure that it wasn't me playing biggrin.gif Before I'd recovered from the shock, I did it again, just to make sure. Unfortunately after that, signs of fatigue set in, and it went a little sloppy on the third attempt.

But it's getting there... smile.gif
