Ive been working odd jobs and skipping meals with cigarettes when i could to save up for my next guitar; the one I'm going to carry with me on stage. I'm sure ya'll can empathize.

Its been a labor of love and at times I feel like a monk giving up worldy comforts to achieve nirvana (and what inspires inner peace better than a new guitar?) but since I can only afford the one guitar, I'd like it to be versatile.

I'm one of those guys that likes to dip my hand in every jar, and so I love playing a little of everything. Though lately I notice I like playing the blues, funk, flamenco and early rock n roll a whole lot (with an interest in jazz growing exponentially by the day). I've been asking around about a guitar that can handle my gamut of musical tastes, and everyone gives me a different answer.

The guy at music store 1 says I should get a Les paul

The lady at music store 2 swears by 335's

The internet says Strats

A different forum says Teles?

It just seems like folks are trying to push their sales agendas on me, and I dont know who to believe. I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on my situation?

I appreciate any and all input, and it'll be paid back in forum karma.

You will need to go to a music store and play several guitars. I think it is the only way you will find the versatility you are looking for, go play and hear it for yourself

Just commenting on the music store sales persons. The lady at store 2 has a well thought through point, the 335 is probably the best to cover all those styles all together and perform them the best. Sounds like she knows what she's talking about, I'd have a chat with her if I were you. And that's a cool looking guitar too! cool.gif

A 335 will cover all the bases you mention - with the exception of flamenco. I'd assume she however is talking about a 2nd hand/used one or a copy as I'd be surprised if you got one for 1200USD new. The list price is about 3500USD and even with mark down it would be the best part of 2500USD for a new one. So make sure you know what she is actually offering here.

Also as with any purchase try other guitars out and chose the one that you like.

Cheers,
Tony

Most people, really juat about all, who play very long, get more than one guitar. I would not focus on the concept of "one does it all". Those are all fine guitars. I would focus on "a guitar I really want, and get a good price for it".

Nobody has pushed Ibanez yet, strange. For that price you can get an Ibanez and 100 six packs of premium beer.

well until I can get a decently paying job with a steady paycheck, I'm gonna have to stick with one piece of equipment. counter intuitive I know but its all I've got to work with, and plus it might make for some creative innovation on my part.

I'd love to own an arsenal of guitars though. who wouldn't?

I have done that, but I'm still quite the novice and I'm not entirely sure what I'm listening for. All the guitars I've tried in my price range feel great in my hands, in their own way. I still need some profesional narrowing it down. I think you guys are onto something with the 335.

Look at Gabriel's lessons. He is playing a Studio. Those are nice. Can't go wrong with a Les Paul. Last year about this time they put them on sale for $1,000 at AmericanMusical.com. Or you can get a scratch and dent for less than that. Those typically are just returns, very minor cosmetic issue that you may not even be able to find at most. I see they have two like that now. One for $900, one for a bit more. The $900 one probably has a more noticeable cosmetic issue, but I doubt even that is much of anything. If anything serious is wrong they will let you ship it back for exchange, and they will pay shipping.

I will stop here, to provide room for the Ibanez cult card carrying members to express themselves.

havn't seen any of that yet. I've heard quite a few bad things though. Apparently they're just for shredders? that true?

Well, the better models are good guitars. They have flat fingerboards, I don't care for that. I like the Gibson radius, which is inbetweenish. Most fenders have a more curved fingerboard, 9.5 inch radius. Gibson is 12. Ibanez is 17.

MickeM has both a les paul and an Ibanez, I think he can give you a good opinion. Generally he makes sense. You out there MickeM?

I consider Ibanez a shredders guitars but im not dissing them smile.gif I play a schecter as my NUMBER 1.. i absolutly love it.. i find it very versitile.. i use it for metal rock jazz whatever blues its got a great tone for too. BUT i am a true metal head and play it by the game so i also own a Jackson and a BC Rich. Im interested in getting a jackson custom shop and an ibanez 7 string.. But my vote stays with schecter as versitle guitar.. not a huge fan of gibson sad.gif

I've got a Schecter myself and an Ibanez. You can't go wrong with a Schecter for any style and you get more bang for your buck VS. any brand out there IMO.

Yes, try some Schecters. Ive tried my schecter to play a ballad Satch song, metal(Death, Thrash, Drone), some jazz fusion licks if you have a nice distortion, blues if you split the coils etc. My model is the C-1+. Try it out. Also, the amp carries the sound of the guitar so if you dont have the "amp" your not gonna have a great tone you are looking for.

Since your on a budget check out Jackson, in my opinion they give you the most guitar for your money. I have the Jackson DK2M and of all the guitars I've played it is undoubtedly in the top 5.

I'm here, I've already been here pushing for the 335 wink.gif
Forget all about Jackson, Schecter and Ibanez for the blues, jazz, fusion tones you're looking for. Sure you can play blues on an Ibanez, but that's not what it's made for. Show up with a Jackson soloist or an Ibanez JEM on a traditional jazz club and you revield that you don't have a clue even before striking the first note laugh.gif
It's all about tone my friend. The 335 delivers what you want. A LP will deliver with the same warmth but with a strike for the more modern, you can if you wish ga crazy and shoot off some Zakk Wylde riffing.
Tonewise the general Jackson and Ibanez will come off wrong, especially if you're looking for vintage tones. Modern fusion on an Ibanez is fine, an adler Jackson ihmo lacks the warmth for this music. Schecter, I don't eben know what wood they are generaly made from. I've visited their site before and was met by at hard heavy rocking wall of sound so I suspect jazz and blues isn't their main genre.

So let's sum it up like this.
Want mainly a blues and jazz guitar - 335 is the way to go. After seeing the prices tonymiro posted maybe an Epiphone can do it for you?
Les Paul - Does what a 335 does just not with the same kind of bluesy and jazzy tone. The 335 is semi hollow body, meaning there's cavities inside, LP is not. Here you can afford a real Gibson on the expense of lost 335 tone. Still very good for your thing.
Ibanez - Modern Jazz and Fusion, sure but forget about a true vintage blues and jazz tone. Nothing BB King would use.
Jackson - n/a

Sorry, much as I love arguing with you fkalich, you are unfortunately talking great good sense smile.gif

Fkalich and MickeM pretty much covered all the main points - Ibanez are awesome guitars, I adore my Jem, but wouln't use it for hard core blues or Jazz - I have my Variax for that at the moment, and will later almost certainly get an LP and some sort of hollow body to complete my collection.

BTW, Line6 Variax is worth a look if you really want extreme versatility - its a modeling guitar and it does a reasonable job of capturing many different guitar tones from acoustic, through hollow body to Les Paul and Strat - might be worth a look.

I've been doing some research, and It almost seems to good to be true. surely you need some special cable or you need to install software into the guitar or something right? I mean, can it just plug into any amp or does line 6 make you use one of theirs?
