Hi Muris,

I'm uploading a file for you to take a listen to. I'm having some difficulty with this song as will be evident in this recording. I'm not worried right now about making it perfect for upload. I just wanted to know if you could help me out.

There are some very obvious mistakes that you will hear. There are some aspects in particular that I am having trouble with. The first one is the bending followed by the taps and then run down and up the scale followed by another ascending scale. I think that is the most difficult part. I thought I would post this to you first and then I will follow-up with a video so that you can see what might be wrong.

The guitar is louder than it is supposed to be on purpose. I want to make sure that you hear all of the mistakes very clearly so that I know what to concentrate on. Please let me know what I should work on and I can follow-up with my progress. Thanks for any advice you might have! smile.gif

I've complimented Jeff before on his tone - as ever it is in large part due to clean playing - Jeff has a nice touch which really helps the tone, but also, he has a nice sounding rig, Jeff, how about sharing your setup details with the curious ? smile.gif

Wow thanks guys! smile.gif

Well, basically I use the PODxt. There are only two settings I have ever used and that is Marcus Lavendell's Winding Roads and one preset called "80's Rock". I might have tweaked the reverb or gain a little to get a sound but it has been mainly only those two on any recordings. Maybe a slight bit more gain until I get too much distortion and then back it off. Wait - I take that back. I mic'd up a Line6 AX212 to record my solo on "Are you Ready" GMC song. I Used an SM58 and a pre-set Joe Satriani sound. I think for this song here though I used the 80's rock sound. So all of my amp sounds have been Line6.

I played this song on a 2004 50th Anniversary Stratocaster using the bridge pick-up. The difference in this Strat as opposed to other standard ones is that it has what is called SCN noiseless pick-ups. I think the SCN part stands for the name of the guy who made them. Honestly though, I bought this guitar on ebay and never heard it before I played it so I really know little about it other than that.

The only other thing I can think of in my particular style is that I attack the strings very hard and I use the side of my pick most of the time with the flesh of my thumb and I get a little more harmonic tone. I like to use the round parts of picks because it sounds a little "smoother" to me. That doesn't always work so well when trying to pick faster and that is where my struggles come into play. I'm trying to correct that. I don't do it all of the time but it just happens that way when I don't think about it.. unsure.gif But that could play a part of it my tone I suppose?? I told Muris I would make a video for him, so if you guys want, I'll video my set-up and you can see what I am using if you are curious.

Thanks for the kind complements! smile.gif

Round side of pick? you mean you'r holding it upside down? I tried that before, but It's just isn't comfortable for me.. I was hoping you could give me the spesification of the patch you used for this, like delay, reverb, etc. so that I could try and recreate it on my digital recorder.

I'll also upload my take of this lesson this weekend, hopefully to get some tips about recording from Tony or you, or marcus, or muris, or anyone else XD

Ahh, I see. OK. Yes I'll look at the settings on the POD and see what they are and try to post them for you. It's funny, I've had the POD for a few months now and I still haven't read the manual! biggrin.gif

Yeah I hold the pick all over the place sometimes. I use the side, but mainly the rounded corders. I'm speaking of a standard Fender heavy pick. I'll use the corners to pick the string and then strike the string at a slight angle. Again, not always but it depends if I'm doing something slow, that's what I'll do to try to get a different sound. I know it sounds strange. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. wink.gif laugh.gif . I'd be more than happy to help you with what little I know of recording. I usually just get a sound I like and then press the record button. I couldn't tell you much of what all of that extra fancy processing stuff is....I wish I knew! But I'll try!

1th !! youre sound is great !!

I hear that some bend notes dont have the right pitch, practice your bends..
And that fast pentatonic scale, thats the difficult part yes, just practice it very slow ( alternate picking )

And give youre vibrato more power ..

Im sure, youre next recording will be far more better !!

Great Jeff, keep it up!

Thanks! good advice. Yeah I think the same of the pitch and vibrato that is what I need to key in on. The bends are difficult. Need practice. smile.gif

Nice take Jeff!! smile.gif

Yeah, there are some mistakes in after-tap part and "one string" run after-after.
It's mainly alternate picking with few pull-offs and small sliding on A string.
Maybe you should try with slower BT,just to see right timing.
Check out GP file as well, hope you can read notation and see more details about duration.
Looking forward to the video and thanks for bringing this up!! smile.gif

Well done!

@Muris - I still need to make a video of this for your help. I haven't been practicing it for a while so I need to work through it first.
