I'll add a +1 to that. They tend to get too pompous or pretentious or something.
I also agree with Pavel about the lyrics. They are just a rhytmic part of the song to me, with a few exceptions. Exceptions like Pink Floyd. And The Wall is the prime there, as someone already mentioned, which is *the* concept album. Every litlle piece of it adds something and helps to build "The Wall".
