Singing/playing Lesson?, Can you dig it?

Awesome But It seems as though a problem many of us face is trying to play and sing at the same time. I'm wondering if we could have a lesson, or even just a discussion on that. Lately I've been trying to play/sing "white room" by eric clapton, but the beat he sings it to is disjointed from the beat of the guitar playing, and it throws me off like a baby on a wild bull. I'm not a drummer, I was not trained in the art of the polyrhythm. This is difficult for me. A lesson to make this less difficult is something I think many people could benefit from. Explanation would take ages and you'll be still missing the point. But I can say few words about it while I'm here. Sing as much as you can and not only in bathroom,don't be shy. Feel the groove,even when you're only singing and not playing. Along with that practice guitar part while feeling the groove. Then just add it too your voice and that's it. Oct 31 2007, 10:57 PM	GMC:er Posts: 144 Joined: 11-July 07	I agree with Muris - it's all about the practice. You have to do each thing until you're blue in the face, then do it some more. And with particularly tricky rhythms, you'll need to practice the given items until they become automatic. Once you get to that point, it will become a bit easier to separate them - to focus on both without focusing on either ( not to sound too samurai ). It's also a bit easier if you start with basic folk-style stuff ( simple rhythms and chord changes ) and just make up some silly songs. I do that all the time, and the kids just love it. Sorry, I don't have any easy answers or approaches for this - just dedication and practice! Learning some basics about playing drums would also probably help expand your ability to separate rhythms, in my opinion. When I started learning and really getting into that, I found it helped leaps and bounds for me being able to "feel" things better without concentrating on them so much, and to keep track of multiple rhythms at once. You don't even need a drum kit to practice the basics, just take the beats, and start simple. For instance, your right hand ( hi-hat ) does 1-2-3-4, your left hand ( snare ) does 2-4, and your right foot ( kick ) does 1-3. Then you can start expanding those patterns slowly to more complicted rhythms. One final note from my experiences. I found that even with a lot of practice, I couldn't put as much into two instruments at once as I could when I focused on just one. For me, playing metal, I ended up dropping the guitar ( we got a second guitarist to replace me for shows, though I still helped write riffs and compose ) and focused on just the vox. I was able to put a lot more energy into my vocals and our stage performance as well. Your milage may vary depending on the type of music, but personally I ended up really disliking being "glued" to the mic stand the whole show - it took away from the dynamicism of the show in my opinion. I'm..... I like......! things that you have to think a little what you have to say. So, your concentration start to dividing. Easy words at first! This exercise helps a lot when you have to sing. It's really difficult to try and learn the music, while trying to remember the lyrics and singing in time, so do yourself a favor and don't do all 3 at the same time in the beginning. Sometimes I'll just play along with the song on mp3 until I've got a workable rhythm down. If it's a strange syncopated rhythm that I'm not used to, I will change my strumming pattern to match my feel for getting the vocals out in time with the changes. I think Luciana had a good idea with just talking the lyrics out, or just making up words while playing the song. I can be practicing on the couch and ad lib stuff kids are doing in the family room while playing the music I'm learning, but keeping that same vocal melody. Then I can add in the lyrics while my guitar playing is on automatic pilot, making stylistic vocal changes so it sounds like me singing, and not trying to be an vocal impersonater. Some songs I can learn in a day, others have taken a couple months. On the hard ones I'll just do what I can and work on something else, then come back to it. There's this one song by John Mayer, "Neon", that took me about 3-4 months to learn how to play and sing. But it's very rewarding to be able to do it now. Windows media player can slow down mp3's without changing the pitch, it's built into the player.
