Hi,

decided to try and learn tush by zz top which i think is a great number. anyway i'm struggling with some of the pinky finger stretches which involve moving from the 5rd fret to the 7th fret (reasonable), and then on to the eighth fret!! Anyone have any suggestions for finger exercises for this really enormous stretch??

I can't get to the 8'th fret either but fretting right behind the 7'th is ok. I mean, if you can't reach the 8'th you can't, just do the best of it.
I don't know which guitar you've got but reaching it on a Gibson LP would be easier than on a Fender Strat or an Ibanez RG. Easiest would be on a Fender Jaguar (probably there are others too but my knowledge is limited to this), the reach could be as much as 1 cm shorter, between a Gibson and a Fender it's like half a cm shorter (in the favor of Gibson).

EDIT: I'm assuming, quitc confident actually, you're playing Tush in G and this is the rhythm part, right? cool.gif

You could also just try working with you hand guys. Try sliding your thumb back more on the neck. And try to put your hand at an angle more, or in a differnet position. If you finally get it. Then hold it for a bit, and let go, then hold it again then let go, etc.. If you got really small hands. Well good luck!!

Yeah, Tush is in G and it's the rhythm before the solo:

5 5 7 5 8 8 7 7 5 3 4 5 (5th string)
3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 (6th string)

If you're index is on the 5th try moving your hand round a bit so that your thumb is in the centre of the back of the neck. That leaves your hand pretty much able to float a bit like a spider over the fretboard and should increase your reach.

Index on 5th I can get comfortably and cleanly get 11th (just make 12th but not clean) by doing the above. Index on 1st then its 6th and 7th; index on 3rd then its 9th and 10th. Both times are a Gibson scale though. It does however take practice and a lot of stretching exercises over time - I play a lot of odd 'piano voiced' chords that require big stretches.

Whatever you do don't strain your hand.

Cheers,
Tony

Perhaps you're having troubles because of the fingering.
Use index for low E string 3rd fret,"middle" finger for A string 5th fret
and pinky for both 7th and 8th frets on A string.
No ring finger this time. smile.gif
