To be a good all-round guitarist you need to learn all major techniques and sweeping is definitely one of them!

Economy picking ..
The general concensus here is that you shouldn't do it. http://www2.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_f...?showtopic=2243 Try this lesson: Speedpicking/alternate picking basics -------------------- QUOTE ("Steve Vai") Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman. |

thanks to those who responded to my question so quickly. I did a little more research on this and found that even kristofer had the same habit that i have and he made a conscious effort to fix that. and look where he is now. now i don't feel so bad haha. It sucks though that i wasted a lot of time practicing something incorrectly but i guess that's part of the process. On a side note, i have to say that if i were to model myself after someone based on technique alone, I would go with Takayoshi Ohmura (at least for alternate picking and anchoring form). He uses standard alternate picking and he has the most relaxed picking hand i've ever seen. Some shredders like impelliteri for example are so stiff when playing that i hold my breath when watching him (no offense). I can't enjoy it. However, Takayoshi Ohmura plays so smoothly at such high speeds it's unbelievable. If you haven't seen him check out any of his youtube videos. He makes everything look so easy. If anyone else has any insight about him or his technique, whether good or bad i'd appreciate it. thanks. p.s. sorry if this should have gone under another thread.- joe
