Should I Learn To Sweep?

hi there.. my first post in this place. (besides introducing myself)
so right now i got a lot of guitar playing, and can play some pretty fast stuff... but, since i learned all by myself, i discovered much later that i use on odd kind of economy picking. whatever im changing strings i keep the same pick movement, and since i also play with a "wrong" hand position, my pick starts to move. Right now im working the nice pentatonic ideas on some lessons, and "fixing" my pick.

Actually, i can sweep too, but i actually dont like the sound that much, prefering (?) much more some alternated pick arpeggios, with more than one note per string. (Paul Gilbert style). So my question is: im losing too much not using the conventional sweeped arpeggios? i believe not, but would like to listen to other people opinions.

thanks, and sorry for the long post. rolleyes.gif

thanks..
i really agree with you, but i think i forgot to say something unsure.gif

i have little time to play guitar, but i want to be able to play the best i can cool.gif so i was thinking: since i will need to fix my crappy picking, i should RIGHT NOW focus only on alternate. I believe its better to learn one thing really well, instead of trying to learn two things at the same time. Later on the road, i might learn sweep just to chalenge myself, as you already said.

well, i think i answered my own question laugh.gif

well, all you guys are still welcome to share your ideas cool.gif

To be a good all-round guitarist you need to learn all major techniques and sweeping is definitely one of them! smile.gif

I am also a new member to gmc and i want to say that so far it's been helpful and i'm glad to see that there are so many knowledgable instructors and other members to help. I actually have a similar question about economy picking myself. I started playing about a year and a half ago and so far i am self taught. When i started my goal was just to have fun, and play things that were challenging and interesting to me. About a year ago a started to learn several different licks involving three notes per string and with this i applied economy picking to them. Now, it seems that whenever i play anything i mix in regular alternate with economy all depending on how many notes per string i am playing and what string i am going to next. I don't think about it anymore as alternate versus economy because to me it's all alternate (except when changing strings). Basically i am afraid that this is yet again another bad beginner habit and i was hoping that a more experienced player could give me some advice on whether this is ok or terrible or what. Also if someone could recommend any particular lessons to me i would also appreciate it. I apologize for the long post. thanks a lot.

Economy picking ..

The general concensus here is that you shouldn't do it.

Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.

I used to do all downpicks then I went to full economy like you, but then heard about the advantages of full alternate. The lesson that helped me break old habits was Pavel's Ionian Speedpicking. The ascending boxes can be played with economy, because either way, it will still be 100%alternate pick, but on descending you are forced to alternate between up and down crossing strings, which I couldn't do for a while.

Welcome ! biggrin.gif

i too would say , asboslutely!! Learn everything, there is no reason you cannot learn "picked" gilbert style arpeggios and swept ones - I like both !!

Give as many techniques as you can a shot, but make sure you dont overload yourself to start with. Take a couple and work hard biggrin.gif

Good luck!

thanks to those who responded to my question so quickly. I did a little more research on this and found that even kristofer had the same habit that i have and he made a conscious effort to fix that. and look where he is now. now i don't feel so bad haha. It sucks though that i wasted a lot of time practicing something incorrectly but i guess that's part of the process. On a side note, i have to say that if i were to model myself after someone based on technique alone, I would go with Takayoshi Ohmura (at least for alternate picking and anchoring form). He uses standard alternate picking and he has the most relaxed picking hand i've ever seen. Some shredders like impelliteri for example are so stiff when playing that i hold my breath when watching him (no offense). I can't enjoy it. However, Takayoshi Ohmura plays so smoothly at such high speeds it's unbelievable. If you haven't seen him check out any of his youtube videos. He makes everything look so easy. If anyone else has any insight about him or his technique, whether good or bad i'd appreciate it. thanks. p.s. sorry if this should have gone under another thread.- joe
