I learned it the hard way: I lowered the strap so that my guitar was(quoting Silenoz,guitarist of Dimmu Borgir) ''at the only right place to be; in front of your balls'' <<<will be edited for language I think^^

So I forced myself to play everything at that low height, I played everything I learned standing. Now I am able to walk, run, jump or do some poses while having my guitar at that ''cool'' height. Was hard at first but it pays of I think.

This is true to some extent. And i mean the exent you pull your strap down smile.gif It really doesen`t matter how low you put your guitar. The audience will listen to music first.
Practise makes it perfect. Actually it is a good thing to stand for like 15 minutes daily and practise your ordinary routine. You will be amased how better you sound and comfortable you fell in the studio after this way of practising.

You don't need to be swinging it like a bass, but if you play Beatles style on stage, all the work in the world won't make you look like an impressive guitarist to non-musicians.

I have to disagree here, John petrucci (along with the rest of Dream Theater) has a huge amount of fans and followers, has been playing live shows for over 25 years and is one of the most respected guitarists of our day and his guitar is always (well atleast 99.99999%) high up.

looks = nothing
music = everything

Once you start to give in to what people say you should look like as a band image- your well on your way to letting a record label push you around and record the songs they're making.

Back on topic, wear your strap however you want- just practise standing up while jamming wink.gif

I think it depends on what guitar your playing while standing. A strat looks whack too much lowered. Les Pauls and Explorers just don't look cool if straped too high. Flying V's and Semi-accoustic guitars look perfect right in the middle. In general I would say: The more progressive you want to play the higher your guitar needs to be straped.

SRV is the man. That guy just played and didn`t even care if his scare would fall across his strings and dump them. No, the guy was in some higher state of mind. I really think that he didn`t really care how his guitar looked on him wink.gif

Alexi looks like an old man with a bad back in that pic, and Uli looks like he's playing in an ABBA tribute band.
I think both low and high can look cool, it depends...

I personally think that if you have it too high, then it can look bad and make it harder to play, but you defenatly ( biggrin.gif ) want to have it higher than low. Not only does it make it easier to play, but it looks better, too.

So, high, but not too high! Just wear it where it feels comfortable and natural.

Too low.

Too high.

Perfect! If you look at the three, you can see how much more comfortable the last guy looks.

Um... yeah... it's.. Chuck Norris...

Once you start to give in to what people say you should look like as a band image- your well on your way to letting a record label push you around and record the songs they're making.

I bolded a few things about your post that should point out why that whole Petrucci spill is irrelevant.

Also, please don't blame the recording industry for songs you don't like. By the way, they're headed way downhill, so if you can find a record label to pay you to conform to them, that's a good find (if you're a 'sell-out').

So, we are not talking about make-up or how to dress, but the performance side of things. Of course you can play a killer show with a guitar up where it's comfortable. However, if you look like you're staring at your shoes the entire time you're on stage, there's still thousands of other bands that can play better and also provide the performance aspect of the show.

Saying that there is no point to 'looks' (as you bluntly generalize) is like saying there's no point to an actor looking convincing as long as they regurgitate their lines. You may not want to put any effort into the visual aspect, but it is not at all 'nothing'.

In my opinion the band must have a good live show in order to be successful...Bend must look good on stage as well as play great.It can't afford to lack in any of these two factors..I find that it is very tricky business.You must compensate both factors well, because If you go out and jump on the stage like crazy - yes you'll probably look very cool but you are bound to make more mistakes in your playing than you should.On the other hand you can sit down on stage and play everything perfectly but the audience than can sit down as well and not have fun at all ?? So bands compensate these two factors and than comes another one - experience..You can practice your live show and become able to do some crazy stunts and still play very good.The more shows you got under your belt, you get better, and gap between looking good and playing well gets smaller.

On the topic...People answered already...YOU should practice playing your guitar standing instead of sitting, its not hard at all to do (I do it always).And also you should position guitar where YOU think it looks cool on YOU and where it is comfortable for YOU to play it..You should not go out and try to copy some famous musicians poses, after all we are all different , and what is comfortable for someone isn't for someone else...Be yourself and you'll look cool!

I must share my oppinion with Bogdan, we have played a lot of times, and always with our guitars not too low. But you really have to look realtively cool and this is why you should find some "golden middle" wink.gif
