Well im sorry to have to tell you but your all wrong. Its not the wood or the pick-ups or the strings or cable or any of that that gives a guitar its unique sound. Its your unique power of ROCK!!!!!!!!!! the energy flows into the guitar and it sounds better if you start to feel it more smile.gif!!

There is a little something in that - if you are feeling a piece, and the sound you are making inspires you , you will play a lot better - maybe it IS the power of rock smile.gif

I definately think that energy can be transmited through human body onto the guitar itself, and then into music. It`s just a matter of prooving it, but I saw it on others and experienced it a number of times, so there must be something in it.

The wood is a large factor in tone. Several great points have been made regarding what affect each part has down to the players style. But, the wood of the body and neck play a very large role. Others have mentioned basswood, used by Ibanez, Someone else mentioned mahogony on a PRS. Just my opinion, but if have mahogony or koa wood, your guitar is going to have a very warm, full tone. A tone that basswood simply cannot produce. I have a basswood Ibanez and a koa guitar , the 2 don't compare as far as tone. Koa is rich and warm while basswood is just lacking warmth and depth. Just my 2 cents but if you are after warm tone, the more dense the wood, the deeper the tone.

you guys know alot more about this topic than I do but just wanted to add something here. Ever played a guitar with all maple neck vs maple with rosewood? I have both and play through a marshall half stack and can tell a difference in the tone of the maple fingerboard. Someone mentioned earlier that you could here all the mistakes through a marshall, trust me I hear my share! ohmy.gif

I was away for the weekend and just came back to find all these posts!

It's good to confirm that even though they are not acoustic guitars the wood still affects and creates the sound of each guitar. It makes sense too, why would they use high quality wood on guitars otherwise!

Thanks all for your replies smile.gif

Yes, different woods give a variety of different tonal qualities!

Ibanez use basswood on their guitars (all the way up to the Gems!) because it is possibly the least inhibiting on your tone ie you can get a wider range of sounds - a good pickup combination with basswood will be very versatile. The downside to basswood is that it is also very soft and does not have a strong bass sound - unlike the name would suggest, its softness also means that it will chip and damage very easily and that tremolo contact points are more likely to be easily damaged.

Alder wood has a similar tonal quality to that of basswood but produces more notable high range frequencies which is better for guitars like Telecasters.

Mahogany is a much more solid wood than basswood or alder so it produces deeper lows and more high pitched mids for soloing, its quite versatile - got a thick strong sound.

There are different types of Maple but generally they have quite bright high sounds with not very much in the way of lows, also ranges quite a bit in quality, be wary!

I dont know much about pickups other than that you will get a very different sound depending on how tight each pickup is wound and whether it is a humbucker or not, actives also pick up a larger frequency of sounds in general and have more features like electronic preamping, active EQ & filters etc etc to refine the sound.

ehh i dunno if what you said about basswood is true, my ibanez fell about 5 feet and landed strings down on concrete all that happened was some of the paint broke off all the way down to the wood, however the wood was all still in tact only the paint was damaged lol

correct. I have two gibson les pauls with the same exact pickups, both fat necks. one a maple top, the other a mahogany top. of course, all gibson les pauls have mahogany backs.

The maple brings out the high highs. the mahogany the high mids. I like both.

At some point I will put a demo on youtube, comparing them. That would be interesting, don't you think?

Fkalich, (or any other person who reads this) do you also own, by any chance, any epiphone Les Paul?

I wonder if there's a big difference in the quality of the sound between the epiphones and the gibsons.

I mean, I guess there must be a difference, given the price difference between epiphone and gibson, but does the epiphone more or less produce the same kind of "LP" sound?

And also: Is there a big difference between the sound of a LP and a SG? They both have humbuckers, that's why I think they might be similar. Though I guess the LP has more sustain, because of the wood and it's thickness.

Any feedback much appreciated!
Thanks smile.gif

I think one of the most overlooked things for making a guitar sound great is perfect tuning. Even if one string is a tiny bit off, it could totally ruin your sound.

Not totally ruined but before I turn to wood and picks I'd be sure to check that. smile.gif

It's all of great matter,absolutely.
But please, don't forget the player, yeah,I know, might sound stupid to someone wink.gif

yeah, the most important is the player biggrin.gif

BTW a good Triple Rectifier could help to sound better !! Don't forget a good equipment... and good cables (I say it because I experimented the pain that causes a bad ones tongue.gif)

A Triple Rectifier would help anyone's tone biggrin.gif
But do you seriously believe cables have such and importance? As long as they are made for instruments they're all the same IMHO.

I said that because lot of people had a incredible equipment but they buy the cheaper cables in the market... I'm not saying that you MUST use a 100$ cable, but I has a bad experience with cables when I configure my rack. I use about 10 cables... eh, maybe a 20 or 30 metres of cable and believe me, it's incredible all the noise that causes a bad ones. So, if you are using only 1 or 2 pedals don't worry but if you are using a complex cable system don't buy the cheapers.

It's really difficult to say what it's the most important because if you had only one piece of your equipment that don't works good it's easy that you sound horrible !!!!

There is a video of Vai talking about tone that I think applies. He was telling a story of when he first started playing with Zappa and asked him one day about his playing to see what Zappa thought. Zappa answered that yes Vai was a good player but his tone sounded like an electric toaster. Zappa then commented that tone is in your "head".

I believe it was actually "an electric ham sandwich". laugh.gif Frank Zappa cracks me up every time...

I agree, my brother has an Pattrick Eggle Custom(1992 model) with wood from the rainforrest ohmy.gif,
He compared it with another Pattrick Eggle Custom that was newer and had an other type of wood.
And ofcause his model made the best sound smile.gif, but i have heard that it is illegal to have guitar and other things made of wood from the rainforrest, it that true? unsure.gif
