About the Collaborations thing, I really want to do it, but I don't have a DAW to process my stuff through...I have nothing. If someone could tell/show me what to get and where, I would get it so I could participate in collabs. Thanks!

Get the cubase software - its a great DAW ! But I think that you can participate in collaborations using less sophisticated software if you want to be participant not leader..

Is there anything I can get for free that's still effective?

It's not imo a prerequisite to have sophisticated or expensive software sequencing to either participate or lead a collaboration drummingguitarist06.

To take part you would need to be able to record your piece both solo'ed and dubbed with the backing track. To lead then you would need to be able to mix all the participants' takes into a single audio file. TBH pretty much any software sequencer can do these adequately - some offer additional functionality but they they are not a prerequisite.

Apart from a software sequencer (or a multi-track that can render to mp3 files for the site) you'd need of course some form of audio card/box to let you record, mix and monitor yourself. Essentially you need to be able to get your guitar/amp sound in to the pc/multitrack and be able to hear it to mix it.

As Owen says Reaper can and is more then able to meet the needs for both participation and leading a collab. It's not free BUT you can use an uncrippled version of it for free to 'trial' it. Reaper technically is shareware that you can try for free in its full, unlimited, uncripped state. If you like it/use it a lot/use to record then you would be expected to purchase. As sequencers go I switched from CUBASE SX to LIVE! and Reaper and have not regretted it. I actually use Reaper more then Live! nowadays as well.

Reaper btw is only one possible freeware/shareware sequencer - there are many others for pcs, Macs and Linux. Similarly there are lots of different solutions/ways for getting your guitar sound in to and out of your pc/multitrack. A lot are discussed on the recording forum and sub forum but shout if you have questions smile.gif .

Cheers,
Tony

6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of the other Steve - Cubase has some features that it can do easily and that Reaper works around and vice versa.

Cubase is a professional software..But for participating in collaborations you can use software like : Reason, Fruity Loops etc there are many..Basically you need to be able to import one audio track in one channel and record on the other one while listening to the backing track.. (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - I just googled this I don't know if it would work just saw features and its free)..BUT try the REAPER definitely can't go wrong with it !

Without Rewiring from another sequencer Muris wink.gif - now there's a question smile.gif wink.gif .

Hmm - if we can cheat and say Melodyne isn't a sequencer then record to that and place melodyne into Reason via Melodyne Bride or rewire... That's cheating though smile.gif . We could wait for 2009 and Reason V5 and see if Propellerheads implement it finally (they didn't in v7 just released though sad.gif ). (Sorry me and Muris are having a bit of a private joke here cool.gif .)

Anyway Reaper, as is Cubase as Bogdan says, and as is Audacity, Reason, Live!, Nuendo, Pro Tools, Sonar, Samplitude, Sequoia, Logic and so on and so on, a professional, and professionally implemented sequencer.

Cheers,
Tony
