First off let me just say I have really enjoyed learning your stuff, I've gotten to the point where I look for new lessons from you before looking elsewhere. Not trying to kiss ass or anything just giving my respect.

My question is when your writing music is there a basic rule of thumb that can help you determine which notes will be best for bending, depending on what key your in and which scale you use or is it all just by ear? When I am improvising its not as big of a problem because I'm in the groove and can feel it easier, but when I'm creating something from nothing it is alot harder. I tend to play slow melodic blues if that helps you at all, alot of pentatonic minor scales. Thanks

Thanks for the kind words,
this is very, very good question indeed. smile.gif

Lets go out of guitar world and use of common bends,
like from 4th to 5th in pentatonic, usually on G string at 1st position etc.

What bend is?
Just another way of connecting 2 notes, sort of legato, smoother one. smile.gif
Nice bend makes guitar cry, sort of speech.

And using of band is really matter of taste, what do you want to play and how.

We'll take 4 notes,E,F#,G# and A on B string,5th,7th,8th and 9th fret,all quarter notes.
Try few combination, bend only from E to F#,then only from G# to A,
finally try it all with bends, only first E will stay normal picked note.
Every one sounds different on it's on way and it's up to you to choose
what fits you best in specific moment.

That's how I see it after all, another way of expression,
so try not to be slave to it. smile.gif

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else!!

Thanks alot for the info, I've never considered if the note I was bending into was in the scale I was in or not, that explains why it sounds like crap!! Cool Thanks again

Well you could use some general stuff like...

Say you are playing blues. Well you would want to use minor pentatonic or blues scale right. Those formulas are like

1-b3-4-5-b7 and 1-b3-4-b5-5-b7.

Blues usually involves dominant 7 chords which are 1-3-5-b7. The b3 of the scale clashes with the 3 of the dominant 7 so it would usually be a wise idea to bend the b3 up one semitone.
