Practicing both will benefit you because you will learn how to perform these techniques better so i'd say to learn both of them.

uleash is correct, do both. you want to do both, no question about that. it takes just as long to do either well, and both are necessary, so do both.

Hi mate! It's always more helpful to practice all the ways possible to play a lick, even more is your goal is to become a top level guitarist. When you say "musician", the technique is just a part of it, and the better technique you have, the more tools you will have available to express yourself. The other part of being a musician, and the most important for me, is the creativity and the expression... your message as an artist.

By conventional I think that lee reffers to "Alternate Picking" technique, that means that you play everything with an alternate up and down pic movement. Sweep Picking means that you cross strings as a "sweep" motion.

Check out these two examples to see what I mean.

"sweeping patterns always have 3 notes per string," conventional patterns do not.

First of all You have to realize that trying to do too much things at the same time will lead no nowhere. Try to focus on one of those before going to next one. At the finall stage You will need both anyway but each one has different approach and needs attention to different details.

Frank Gambale plays everything with Sweep / Economy Picking. Check his scales patterns:

hahaha he has really interesting clinics, but it's true that it's difficult to complete them. I have completed many clinics by Gilbert, Petrucci, Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Mcalpine but I could complete one by Frank... don't know the reason. blink.gif
