Skalde
Kai Hansen
Jon Schaffer
Jeff Waters
Jose Mena
I don't know who would be best, but in the Metal genre I would have to say Michael Romeo, his guitar riffs are awesome powerful, and technically challenging. His Orchestration is amazing, I compare him to John Williams. Everything key changes in songs, how he blends the parts so nicely, most of the work is done by him. I admire him as a guitar player but mostly as a songwriter

Well.. for me its definitely Michael Romeo and Devin Townsend.

Romeo for technicallity and art (I, personally, would put him right next to all those Mozarts and Bachs..smile.gif ),

Devin for
1) the funny stuff, he can do (Check this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMLXoobDKWs ),

2) the technicall stuff, he can do ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rMzit6DZrg...feature=related ) - those chorus sweeps are just brutal..

3) the deep and meaningfull stuff, he can do ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeG-6bpeUkA...feature=related )

4) For the amazing EMOTIONS he can put into song.. this is the strongest piece of music I ever heard in terms of the emotionness.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrxmrS9FIzc
Gabriel Leopardi
I can't name just one... There are a lot of songwriters that I like and many of the named here are awesome... so this could be a cool thread to know underated talented musicians.

I agree:D

Favourite songwriters could be classed so many ways technical, non technical, band, solo.

As solo Steve Vai is quite incredible he really blends some wack stuff together and makes it flow smoothly.
On the other hand Nickelback (not to technical at all) are brilliant songwriters to....if their album sales are anything to go by:)
John Mayer, Killswitch Engage. There's to much variety of talent across styles out there to mention.
