Hi GMC, just wondered what made you guys pick up the guitar? Why did u choose that instrument? What was the first song or "thing" u learnt??

I picked up the guitar because i was grounded for skipping school once tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif
I was so bored and i learnt my first song Seven nation Army by white stripes smile.gif
Since then guitar and music became my life biggrin.gif

A friend taught me the intro of "nothing else matters". Bought a guitar days later smile.gif

Actually it was because I was horribly bored during the days and I needed some time to kill. That and the fact that I always wanted to be able to play some of my favourite songs pretty much made me do it. My big life goal of guitar playing was to be able to play All Apologies by Nirvana. I managed to do that a month after picking it up, then I realised there was more to the intstrument laugh.gif

A coincidence really, I've played various instruments since I was 7, mostly the electric organ and clarinet. Since about age 12 I was curious about the electric guitar but was still into other instruments. I also concidered drums. Not until I was 20 there was a guy at work who was selling his equipment, a beginner amp and guitar. I was working night with absolutely nothing to do so I decided to finally start learning to play so I bought his guitar and amp and started to practice there during my night shifts.

started with recorder.. went and did piano.. hated it.. wished i had stayed with it.. in public school i learned violin... then i wanted to learn drums.. when my parents saw i showed no real interest in drums they bought me a guitar and i fell in love smile.gif

I'd just given up the oboe because it was boring and was looking for another instrument. Some of my friends played guitar and the music I was into all involved guitar so I gave it a try and haven't looked back since.

Well when I started listening to music, I fast discovered that I like rock and metal the most. And what is rock and metal without the guitar? Liking rock and metal = liking guitar:) So I bought one, thinking maybe I will be able to "rock" one day:D

I always wanted to play the guitar but my first teacher at the age of 12 scared me off (accoustic + music theory). I did not try to learn the guitar until I was 17 and discovered that with tabs, there is no need for learning how to read music sheet...

Just kinda happened really. I was watching something on Tv about Guns 'n Roses and saw slash playing and said 'What the heck I'll give it a try". That was about a year and a half ago and I still remember it. Good thing about it was that my parents loved the idea. Had to pay for it though but it was well worth it biggrin.gif

I was bored one day, and saw the old acoustic guitar on the floor, and decided to play with it a bit. And that was that biggrin.gif

I learned some things by memory on piano in high school, but couldn't read music, and always just assumed guitar would be impossible for me. But music was still my greatest thrill... Fast forward 30 years, and I'm thinking maybe I could just get a cheap guitar and learn Amazing Grace with a slide. Then one day I heard a solo by a favorite band, and I fell off the cliff. I said "that's it, I have to at least OWN the instrument that can do that."

As we all know, once you pick it up, you're hooked. smile.gif

Was around the mid 70's I bought Caress of Steel by Rush (thinking it was a new Pavlov's Dog album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvDE3eBlVHg ) and I heard Bastille Day...that got me hooked. I made the same mistake in the mid 80's when I bought Alcatrazz's No Parole from Rock and Roll thinking it was a new MSG album (Graham Bonnet sang on both)...that got me hooked on shred!

Heard kill em all when it first came out and everyone else was listening to journey, i remember chillin at the pool and listening to metallica, everyone hated them but me and a few friends... Picked up a guitar and wanted to learn the whole album, I thought if i learned that album I would be one of the baddest guitarist in the world..

First song i learned was working man by rush

I always wanted to learn an instrument since I was 10. I love pop and instrumental music a lot but I have never really pick 1 instrument and learn it. At the age of 17, my best friend invited me to his band rehersal for couple for Rock songs, I was hooked to guitar at that time and never walked back. Rock and metal rules.

Speaking of favorite music. When I bought my guitar I told myself that within 1 year I wantedto be able to play the solo in "Wayfaerer" by In Flames. And I made it!

Motivation plays a huge role. I think it's alot easier to learn guitar if you have something specific in mind that you want to learn.

I have a friend that owns me some money and gave me an guitar insted of money after that I was sold.

My uncle play spanish guitar since I have memory, so guitar was always in my life and in my ear.
I played a bit but with more pain than glory tongue.gif

Time passed and as I always liked guitar, and heavy metal, I bought a Behringer usb and found funny to play some chords with all of these sounds. Then I found GMC and thought... If I learn to play seriously?

And here I am laugh.gif

First thing I played... First chords of Smoke on the water... as many of us I think wink.gif
Sircraigery
Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction for sure, but once the video for November Rain came out and I seen that solo, I knew I would play when I could afford one.

I didn't come from a wealthy family when I was little, so I had to wait 4 years (and that really really sucked) LOL

It was down to a mate of mine I'd not seen him in ages after we left school. I went to 6th Form college to study A'levels and pretty much hated the 2 years I spent there mad.gif . Whilst my mate did a music course and started playing electric guitar.

I met up with him during the summer holidays and its was a 'holy grail' moment when he showed me what he could play and that was it, I had to play the electric guitar. Never looked back since and I find its a great way to relax after a stressful day.
Velvet Roger
Played several instruments since I was 8 (drums, keyboards, piano), although very low level and decided to switch to guitar in order to facilitate and contribute to my heavy metal looks when I was 16 smile.gif

Listened to Comfortably Numb (Pulse Version) from Gilmour 2 years ago and the rest is history.
David Wallimann
What an interesting topic!
I picked up the guitar after seeing my friends in middle school playing.
First song I learned was Yesterday from the Beatles I think...

TwistedSun
Metallica.

After hearing the crazy tapping solo to their song 'One' I figured I had to learn it. So I did.

Thanks to David Wallimann for your awesome classical taps lesson. biggrin.gif

Watching "Crossroads" when I was a kid, and seeing Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio having a guitar battle in the end for the guys soul! That changed me forever!

Stevie and Jimi.
The Uncreator
I heard Dave Murray playing on Brave New World (Iron Maiden).

That was about 7 years ago since I bought it, Havent stopped since smile.gif

Initially, I was drawn to the guitar because I wanted to meet wimmings. I soon got over that after realizing I was in it for the music. smile.gif

A friend of mine just threw a guitar in my arms one time when I was over at his place, and learned me Tom Dooley tongue.gif
After that I was satisfied, walking around thinking "Hah.. I can play the guitar.... It wasn't that hard!" Of course, I had no motivation to keep playing just because of that one song..
About 6 months or so went by without even thinking about the guitar, when suddenly I was searching youtube for some random remixes of game-music (more spesific: The Morrowind theme song). I saw this clip, and this clip, and I just knew tongue.gif
After that, I of course had to take back the "It's not that hard" part... Since it was pretty hard to pass that first step between random noises and music ^^

My parents wanted me to learn an instrument and since I was a metal head back then already I picked the guitar smile.gif

I saw my friend playing some cool metal riffs, i was amazed and decided to learn how to play:) But actually i picked guitar year later, when i was 17.
Pedja Simovic
My dad used to play songs from 60s,70s,80s to me and my brother every night so that was my main influence smile.gif
He could play chords, sing along and do the riffs with some beginner soloing with major/major pentatonic.
The rest just falls into places - anywhere from Metallica , GNR, Nirvana, Santana to Satriani, Eric Johnson to nowdays my all time favorite Michael Brecker and John Coltrane!

I was 9 yrs old. My friend Matt had a Fender Bullet Deluxe. He didnt even know how to tune it. I stayed over at his house one night and we stayed up all night listening to his brothers albums.

I was introduced to the guitar and metal and I never looked back.

Judas Priest's British Steel was the standout album that night. Specifically the song "Grinder". I had never heard music like that. Mom always played country in the old station wagon. My love of metal was instantaneous.

Thanks Matt!

My story goes somethin' like this... AHEM

There once was a homeschooled kid who was ridicerously bored last September...
I wanted to play, but all I had was an acoustic... A CRAPPY acoustic... My cousin taught me
my first ordered notes... "Smoke on the Water" and I played that for monthes... After that I
told myself, "Guitar sucks..." Then I found GMC and that christmas got my first electric guitar...

And here I am now tongue.gif
