Gilbert, IMO, is the best shredder with the best balance of amazing technique, creativity, phrasing, and rhythm.

Check out his album "in the wake of chaos". It is really good. He has some really good instructional DVD's as well, especially if you are into tapping.

Defiently Paul gilbert and guthrie govan. i love pauls patterns and blue phrasing and rythmical playing and Guthrie govan uses some of the coolest Scales , all of his Chromatic stuff sounds sick but i never seem to get the same sound when i play sad.gif mainly because he knows what he is doing tongue.gif
The Uncreator
Michael Angelo Batio, Great balance of technique, soul, and creativity.
ZakkWylde
Gilbert and Loomis
David Wallimann
Would Shawn Lane be considered a shredder?
fatb0t
David, I think Shawn Lane was most definitely an original shredder.

Muris, Emir, & Buckethead for me smile.gif
Piotr Kaczor
YJM, PG, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker
Mandos
Mattias IA Eklundh if you consider shredder as a subset of guru. wink.gif

Other than that I have to say Emir and Muris. smile.gif
djohnneay
I especially like Herman Li. Saw him with Dragonforce in Amsterdam this year and I think they played really good and clean. However, I think there are better players, like for example Yngwie Malmsteen and Buckethead.

Paiva
Paul Gilbert and Petrucci
Matt23
Paul Gilbert and Dimebag Darrell. smile.gif

Well naturally I would say Paul Gilbert, for me he stands apart from the rest because he is totally musical with it, awsome phrasing and dynamics its the entire package. That said I think Buckethead is pretty darn awsome and he has some incredibly diverse albums under his belt.

Rated Htr
Luca turilli & Syu
SensE
IS Andy Timmons a shredder? I vote him anyway. next would be Michael Angelo Batio ! then, i vote for Takayoshi Ohmura. His music is soulful and inspiring.

Apart from all those already mentioned, I think there should be a mention of:-
Kiko Loureiro!

ErikEklund
Guthrie smile.gif
Jaymz
Ron Jarzombek for his complex 12 tone stuff.
Caelumamittendum
I'm sure Becker has already been mentioned. But Jason is really rocking my boat these days.

Vinnie Moore smile.gif
helo92
Alexi Laiho and Steve Vai
Déjà vu
I have to say that I usually jump from player to player, but at the moment I like...

Shawn Lane, YJM, Michael Romeo, Jason Becker, Marcus Lavendell, and Paul Gilbert.

EDIT: Oh, and Eric Johnson (If he counts as a shredder)...
Santiago Diaz Garces
A lot to say

Kiko Loureiro and Jason Becker on the first step. Then will come Paul Gilbert, Michael Romeo, YJM, Stephan Forte (You must check out this guy. His band Adagio is amazing!), and I liked a lot some Emir stuff.
