Starting over on mixing and mastering some songs that I have recorded for my sons band. Here is the Drum Track that was recorded with mic's. So I have a Kick Track, Snare Track, 2 Tom Tracks and 2 overhead tracks. Here are the results so far. This is for a Metalcore Band so the drums will need to be heavy and really cut through. Not sure if I will need to make the Kick sound tighter or not.

cool drumming. What about a little more compression on the kick ?

More compression is what I was thinking also and maybe some EQ. I am going to play with it and maybe use multiple tracks on the kick to see if I can get some more power out of it. I thought it might be cool to work on it and then post the improvements as I go. See if I can't mix this song using advice and feedback on the forum. Audiopaal did the same thing kinda with a song he mixed. Although he really did not need much advice. His went pretty quick and sounded really good. I am quit a bit lower on the learning curve right now. But hope to work my way up with these 5 songs I have to do.

Yes you should low shelf the thing below 30 HZ and perhaps apply some boost at about 1.5 khz. Be carfull about the way you employ compression. Set your attack to at least 20 ms use a ratio of 2:1 and set the Threshold to just a few db reduction. You should get some extra punch.

Ok I did some work to it and downloaded the file back at the beginning of this thread. Was thinking that I could take this as one track and reload it and then mix the bass and guitar and vocals to it after working on those.

I think this drums recording lacks lowmid side of eq, around 400-500hz but also you gave lot of room for snare drum I think, it doesnt sound so tight. and maybe overheads could be a little bellow too, and there is the issue of preamp too. Possibly one of overheads is phase cancelling with one of tom mics. And you should always pan overheads biggrin.gif

On the mixing side, you could work on seperating hihat and snare... Just do some eq ing find where the snare and hihat are, and cut everything else...

That is my personal opinion btw biggrin.gif

Some good advice. Had not considered panning the overheads. When you say find out where the hihat and snare are and cut everything else. You mean cut everything else on the snare track?
Will give some of these things a try. Thanks

Man I am not sure if this will produce a phase cancellation effect but if you dont have seperate channels for hihat and snare, just double that track, open your parametric eq, move your Q point to a point where you can find the body of your snare sound... Shelve the frequencies before and after that point, try to make a good sounding snare from there... After that, go to the other duplicate, do the same thing with hihat, find its main frequency, shelve everything else (mostly snare) and try to separate those two like this. This way you can level kick and snare with minimal interference of hihat....

If you can, send me separate tracks and I'll see what I can do. If you are interested, pm me I'll send you my email...

Sounds good to me. If you want to pm me your email I can send you individual files. Gonna have to leave the office for a little while so it will probably be tonight before I can send anything. Thanks for all the help.

The second track is better, and now I think you can work on snare a bit. I think it is a bit lost out there.

I also like the second one better, I would also try to make the kickdrums kick a bit more wink.gif
