Hey guys, I wanted to see what is your picking technique of choice when starting to play something, for example jamming, or just playing something you composed. Do you use more legato or AP? Usually people have legato more developed, but in fact, it's more due to the fact that AP is not developed that much, while fretting hand can move more freely. What do you think?

Legato has been my choice these days. I just dialled a great tone for my guitar and it's just so smooth when doing legato, it's addictive
On the other hand a few months ago, I couldn't stop APing because it's just more in your face sound.

Thanks to Todd's chat, my AP is pretty good while my legato still has to develop. But I'll get there eventually.

AP is all I have done, just starting to practice legato.

I like both approaches, although in recent time I prefer AP, because I really got that picking tone polished up. It's not fast, but sounds very smooth.

Both have their place for sure. AP sounds nice and agressive and more powerful. Legato is smooth. You can get more percussive notes out of AP, even though with legato, you can mute the strings a bit with the heel of your picking hand to get more of a percussive sound. For me, it's easier to play fast legato since my AP skills need so much work. I've spent quite a bit of time in the last couple years working on picking, but haven't improved speed very much.

Your AP has rocketed up! Due to several million pick strokes at crazy BPM that I can take personal blame for in our two hour chat intensives
And of course due to your own ardent practice! Well played.
Needless to say, (big shock I know) I love alternate picking! ;0) And I love Economic picking. But then again, I love to play with one hand! Which is pure legato. So next chat, more playing with one hand! Over 9 frets!

I like both depending on the sound that I want to get. AP sounds more aggressive and accentuated while legato always sounds smoother. I try to be balanced on combine both when I'm jamming.

It depends on the composition, but trying to balance both approaches!

Im an AP guy, i love the sound of legato, but i haven't developed yet, wanna do it for sure, but im pretty proud of my picking, so i'm trying to get super fast with AP so i don't have to learn legatos
but hey, i'm a slow hand guy

My approach is inclined towards Gabe and Sinisa's - it depends on the context, and as Ivan said, it's good to have the AP polished regardless of playing slow or fast, especially in the context of playing with the orchestra, where I usually use very little gain, for more tone sweetness!
