Hi GMCers, it's time for a new challenge!

GUESS THE TONE CHALLENGE

Description : Time to get creative with your tone shaping skills. We will supply you with a backing track, tabs and dry guitar track of instructor Adrian's brand new unpublished lesson!

Once the challenge is over - we will publish the lesson and you'll see how close you've got.
It doesn't matter how well you play the lesson rather which tone you choose!

- Guitar Pro tab : Click to view attachment
- Text tab : Click to view attachment
- Dry guitar track (as reference for nailing the solo) : Click to view attachment

My god...I'm not even close to being able to play that. Too technical for me at this point. I could do the main notes...but the accent notes and muted notes on other strings is above me right now.

Sounds good or actually how does it sound that is the question! biggrin.gif

I think I'm in for this. I just have to figure how to connect my wah to my UX2 Dial up some fat tone. Hmm
Fingers X cool.gif

Hey dude, well, it isn´t as tricky as you may think, it is pretty simple in fact, if you need help i can help you, or did i made it too complex?, i tried to make it just using a few notes, and put more emphasis on the tone part of the song, but i could understand that the tablature is scary, did you heard the dry track i recorded?

i will be today on the chat at 10pm GMT, i will ne giving tips on how to play this song smile.gif

How the heck do you play an open string, while also picking a different string? I get it when it's a powerchord...but with string skipping, I'm lost. Do you fingerpick it?
Adrian Figallo
finger it is smile.gif, again, i will be on the video chat today at 10pm GMT, i will give some tips to play it, trust me, it is not hard at all, it´s more feeling/tone that technique, i´m a very simple guy smile.gif
Praetorian
Can't make it to the chat tonight...have to work at that time. Is it possible to record the chat session so I could view it later?
Adrian Figallo
it is in about 30 mins tongue.gif, and yes, the gmc staff is recording them, will ask for a copy smile.gif

Know what would make this even better?? Backing tracks at different tempos! Add a COMPLETELY different feel to the solo!

One more thing....Is this standard tuning?

I have to say...even though I suck at playing it, I think I have a pretty cool tone going!

Hey dude, would you like the slower backing tracks? i think i can post them here, but i will ask the GMC admins first, let me know smile.gif

also, yes, standard tuning wink.gif

that´s the whole thing man, go for it, i suck at playing too, but i make it up by dialing some good tones smile.gif
Praetorian
Still working on it. I almost have the tone where I like it, still have a LOT of work to do in nailing the song though!
Adrian Figallo
great stuff man, i will record a youtube quick video, with some tips on how to play it smile.gif
Gitarrero
A quick youtube-video would be great! This tune sounds easy, but it really is tricky!

Hi GMC

This is my take on Adrian's new lesson.

I've record with line 6 pod farm : AMP = 1990 Brit j-800 - Drive 4 Bass 1 mid 8 treb 8 pres 3 vol 3
CAB = 4X12 1996 Brit Celest v-30's
Gate -Verb

I quite liked the tone I got I had more Drive and Presence to start with but backed them off a bit. I not sure it's come through as good as I hoped for maybe I need to double track all the tracks but not sure how to do that yet.

Anyway if I win ha ha I'll be talking tone with you Mr Adrian king of tone!

Sorry video out of focus somthing else I need to work on. wink.gif
Adrian Figallo
hey dude, that's a very nice approach to the tone man, i wont say more for now, but thanks for entering the competition!
btw i will record a quick video now, showing everyone a couple of things to play that song!
Adrian Figallo
hey guys, here is a little video i made, hope you can find it useful smile.gif

Praetorian
Bro, that helped a LOT!! I was trying to pick all the notes...not use finger picking. Time to start over!!
Adrian Figallo
i´m glad it did man, we still have plenty of time to get more takes, and i'm looking forward to see yours smile.gif
Bogdan Radovic
Anyone else going to enter this one? smile.gif
Vaidya

Awesome! smile.gif
It's more about the tone then actual performance.

Anyone else going to give it a shot? The deadline is approaching?
Praetorian
Holy crap, I didn't realize the deadline was so soon. Real life has forbid me to practice as much as I would like. I'll still submit my entry, but it won't be today!
Bogdan Radovic
Hey guys - this was fun! smile.gif

This lesson has been published - check it out : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/David-...-Billy-Gibbons/

Congratulations to Zoom for your brave take - you won the challenge! smile.gif
Adrian will send you a PM so you two can arrange a private session.
Todd Simpson
I missed the challenge but liked the track so much I took a "Pure Tone" approach and added TONE ONLY (actually two tones) to the dry tracks. Turned out pretty nice. Great track!

Wow! Really nice take Todd.

Question? The last Bend with the Wah how do you get it so even? It sounds more like wah with delay. or is it an auto wah sort of thing?

I tried to move the wah with my foot but I found it really hard to keep even.

What effects did you you use?

Ye ha! laugh.gif I won!
Thanks Bogan and Adrian.

It's a pity no more guys jumped on board. It would have been so cool to hear other takes even from the instructors.
Hope we do this again.
I'm really new to recording and feel out of my depth but I really want to improve.
