Whats up guys? I'm looking for some advice. I currently play a basswood rg370dx with the stock inf pickups. I have adjusted the pickups back and forth and havent found a tone I really like. No matter what the tone doesnt sound articulate enough.
Any advice on pickups to upgrade to? I try to cover satriani songs and also enjoy Vai's tone as well. I'm big into 80's metal and shred. I'm looking for punchy pickups that dont sound muddy. I'm looking at the evo, evo2, breed, jb but I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks!

alnico pick ups will give you a little better cleans and ceramics will get a little gainier distortion most upgraded brands ,I beleive will do better then those stock pups ,and I have a dimarzio super distortion on my jackson which does that style very well you can also search dimarzio's and seymor duncan's site for general references to eqing and overall drive of each individual pick-up hope this helps

Nice feel, great axe, but those stock pups are horrible and almost designed to be replaced. Evos sound awesome in basswood, I would recommend trying those for your type of axe. If I had an old school RG, I would definitely be replacing the original pickups with them.
I suggest a bit of research, youtubing it up also helps give you a good idea.
You could end up with something that deep sounding like (if that's what your after):
Equip: Ibanez RG370DX (DiMarzio Evo Pickups), PODxt
Note: I didn't try this myself but was close to getting an old school RG550 and replace the pickups with EVOS (so I've already done some research)

I'm an EMG freak, but they don't sound good in Basswood. Dimarzio Super Distortions, do though.

I would go for Evo pickups too, they are very powerful and retain clarity a lot. Not really everyone's cup of tea, you should check with someone who has them on a guitar before buying if you can. If you can't you can try with something similar JS and Vai are using, you won't make a mistake. They will sound better then INF that's for sure.

Todd here I've actually got an old school RG560 with the stock pickups and they are a bit crap. The guys are right on concerning the EVO's and Basswood. Good combo The Rockfield Maffia boys make some great pickups with killer dynamics and articulation as well. Try to see if you can play as many guitars as possible in a guitar store or what not before making the final call. Here is a vid of the tone of the SWV (sort of hot rod short wound) by Rockfield. They make hotter ones of course.
I have played on the Ibanez JEM 7VWH somewhere back in 2004 (the one equipped with EVO pickups) and honestly it was a little bit out of control for me at that time. Now, after experiencing more pickups, guitars and starting to hone control over an axe, I realized that it is better to have more of something and to reduce it by lowering gain for instance (some axes have natural harmonics which can be outlined by different tone settings) in the case of aggressive pickups, than trying to boost some lesser pickups and thus obtaining a sound which would be far from natural. Hope this made sense - I had this conversation earlier with a friend and we concluded this

Thank again for the input guys. Sorry I'm so slow getting back to the posts but I have GREAT news and not so great news. The not so great news is that I have been playing maybe 20 mins a day (if I'm lucky)...the great news is that my wife and I had a little boy! I've got a free moment from the poopie diapers so I'm putting in some solid practice time. I'm working on Johnathan Burgos' Steve Vai soloing lesson and have most of it down but I can't get the speed of the fast section so I'm playing it over and over and over again with a metronome. Also, my camera is broken so I only have my phone to record video and it sounds terrible. If i can figure out how to use one of these recording programs I have then I'll post something with that. Thanks again!

You guys ever heard any Dragonfire active pickups? Price seems like it may be too good to be true.
