Todd Simpson
Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Here is your link your personal training ground/HELL!

Practice!

Well played! Congratulations on taking on MISSION 1! Here is where you did your DRILL BOSS proud!

MEDAL OF HONOR
1.)Consistent strikes, Nice!
2.)Consistent Tempo, also Nice!
3.)Wide range of fret choice!
4.)Impressive speed!

Here is where half your squad got killed.

PURPLE HEART
1.)String traverse: It's hard, believe me I know. Look at 0:14, and 0:21 on the video. When shifting between strings and trying to maintain consistent speed/strike, any flaws will show up in a big way. The good news is, it's fixed with some more running of the bit.
2.)Drift: Just to show how well you can stick to a given count, try to play with a metronome click or even drum click track in the background and only speed up when it speeds up so show you can LOCK in to a given time signature.

In short, WELL DONE BUT YOUR NOT DONE YET! Take another pass at this one and focus on string traverse and higher frets as those are hard sometimes, and on locking to a given tempo/click. Shoot one more Vid and SLAY THE ENEMY!

FIGHT! I mean, PRACTICE!
Todd

Soldier you are on a MISSION! smile.gif Actually several MISSIONS. As you complete one mission/lesson, start on the next! So Do one Lesson/Mission at at time, making a video example for each workout in a given lesson. If there are four examples, then you have to master all four and make videos so it gets CRAZY hard later on. For now, there are mostly one example per lesson. So start on your next!

All of the lessons/Missions are listed at the bottom of this page in the wiki! Get Moving Solider!

Sir Yes Sir, for I do not wish to move on with out being ready Sir, My Mission is to be the best of the best and you will take me there Sir, if its not good enough I will practice it till my fingers bleed Sir
Todd Simpson
Sorry for the delay Soldier! To ensure smoother reaction time on the part of your Drill Instructor (me), be sure to shoot me a PM whenever you complete a mission so that I know to check your THREAD OF DEATH for new Mission!

One to the DeBrief!

SOLDIER YOU RAWK! This is well played!
-Right hand planted firm on bridge
-Good pick strikes! Nice and clean!
-Speed Kills! Nice and fast!

You even did DOUBLES and TRIPLES! The only complaint I'd have is with the triple picking being a tad off set to the metronome but that's understandable as triples are hard to match to 4/4 time. You played with consistency and that's all that really matters to me. WELLL DONE!

Congratulations Soldier! You have BEEN PROMOTED! YOUR ARE OUR FIRST 3rd MISSION MONSTER!

OK Mission 5, Here it is wink.gif

I notice I play faster than others, am i really that good? Dont get me wrong I know Im not Great wink.gif
Todd Simpson
Well played Soldier! You are playing nice and brisk! As for marking your performance against our other brothers, keep in mind you are only in a PITCHED BATTLE against yourself! And I"m happy to say your fighting and winning!

One small note on tone. I can hear what your playing but it does sound kinda small in terms of tone. It's fine for our work hear as I just need to hear what your playing, not a Marshal Stack. What kind of amp are you using and what do you have available to you for your weapons of war? Also, do you have an audio interface? Or even an adapter to put your guitar cable in to your computer sound card? I'd like to be able to hear your palm muting and pick strikes a little bit better if at all possible. But these are pretty small concerns. Keep fighting!

On to the DEBRIEF! YOU JUST LEVELED UP SOLDIER!

MEDAL OF HONOR
-Good Precision
-Spiff Strikes
-Killer Speed

Congratulations Soldier! You are our first Warrior to see LEVEL 5!!!!!!!!

Im using a Mini Tone Master by Fender, It has 2 speakers, I believe to be 2 inches each, perfect for my computer desk, I am using a web cam with a built in mic, on my other computer I have a sound card but the video has lag, I have 3 other amps, 2 are in a picture of mine, the 3rd one is smaller than those but has the same style, I also have access to a camera with video recording, I dont think Im palm muting
Todd Simpson
While the setup you are using with the micro/mini 2 inch speakers is fine if that's what works best. It's really hard to hear any bass as there isn't much to hear and thus I can't tell if your not palm muting which is something I'm trying to get everyone to do on these workouts as it helps separate notes and makes you practice muting while pick traversing strings. If possible, can you skip the mini me amp and just plug in to the computer where your web cam is and use something like Amplitude Free? That way you can create a full range recording and it will really help me get a better idea of what's being played.

Let me know if you have any questions about installing/using Amplitude 3 or what not. Onward!

Todd

I like that your trying new tones as well! On the RP50, can you tweak the Cabinet emulation presets? I don't know how many cabs are in it but the cabinet is the final bit in the chain typically to trick the ears in to thinking it's a real amp! Tone, like playing is a life long journey and I'm glad to see you trying new bits. Keep it up!

SOLDIER!! This is REALLY WELL FOUGHT!!! You are going above and beyond with your spiff Double Picking here. It's really nice work! Understand when I say I have a weapons grade respect for your playing and the effort you are putting in. I feel like I"m reporting a death in the family to tell you that the second bit, around 19 seconds, is the only thing keeping you from the Vaunted Rank of LEVEL 11 (Which will be our FIRST Level 11 Mission Badge Ever), is the metronome. You are playing in a fine manner, at time index :19, it's just not tied to the metronome as much as it should be. Your timing is solid. It's just a slightly different timing than the metronome. I Know you can synch to the clicks. There may be too many clicks going on actually. If you don't need them, reduce the number of clicks by cutting the metronome speed in half. Count the time in your head and use the clicks just for reference. You should be able to hear the missing clicks in your head.

Give this one more ASSAULT soldier and be our FIRST TO BREACH 11!!!!!
