Wow, these are a lot of hard questions
1.- My goals:
1.1.- Ear training:
1.1.1.- Short term: Being able to distinguish the chords within a song. Being able to figure out simple melodies with some legato techniques.
1.1.2.- Medium term: Being able to distinguish chord embellishments and more complex melodies.
1.1.3.- Long term: Being able to play whatever i have in my head
1.2.- Guitar playing: Have some fun and being able to play cover songs from my favorite bands (see below).
2.- Weakness:
2.1.- Ear training: Everything, i'm starting with it. I'm able to find the key of the song and figure the chords out of it if they are in the major or minor scale and without embellishments or inversions. I'm also able to figure out some simple melodies if they are not to fast or complicated. All of these with a lot of work and try and error . My first objective is to be able to do it without having to try every chord of the scale.
2.2.- Guitar playing: My rhythm may need some work, and my bendings are always too much or not enough (ear training will improve this, i supose)
3.- Strongest point: I can't think of anything...
4.- Favorite guitar players: Some of my favorite guitarrists are Slash, John Frusciante, Jimmy Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Randy Rhoads. Some of my favorite bands are Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Deep Purple, The Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Muse, The Strokes... i don't know, there are so many... I've done this youtube list where you can see some of my favorite songs: Great Rock Songs

I'm looking forward to begin my training laugh.gif

Awesome!
So here is how we will be doing it smile.gif
First I will start posting tracks for you and will give you little hints! Every time tracks will get harder and harder! smile.gif I will help you develop relative pitch so you will be able to transcribe music without any problems!
To start I would like to see at what level you are so I am not gonna give you any hints or clues just yet!
Here is the track!

It's been lot of fun, thank you Alex.
If i'm not wrong the progression goes this way:

I iii ii V x2
I ii iii IV x2
I

I think it's in the key of A, so the song would be like this:

A C#m Bm E x2
A Bm C#m D x2
A

With rhythm:

E |--5--5--4--4----|--7-----------7-----------7--------7--7------------|||
B |--5--5--5--5----|--7-----------7-----------9--------9--9------------|||
G |--6--6--6--6----|--7-----------7-----------9--------9--9-----------o|||
D |--7--7--6--6----|--9-----------9-----------9--------9--9-----------o|||
A |--7--7--4--4----|--9-----------9-----------7--------7--7------------|||
E |--5--5----------|--7-----------7------------------------------------|||

-5--5--2--2----|--4-----------4-----------5--------5--5------------||--5----||
-5--5--3--3----|--5-----------5-----------7--------7--7------------||--5----||
o6--6--4--4----|--6-----------6-----------7--------7--7-----------o||--6----||
o7--7--4--4----|--6-----------6-----------7--------7--7-----------o||--7----||
-7--7--2--2----|--4-----------4-----------5--------5--5------------||--7----||
-5--5----------|---------------------------------------------------||--5----||

As text tabs are difficult to understand i've take a picture of the TAB so it's easier to see:

I have used different voicings for the Bm chord because they where easier to use in each case tongue.gif .

Great job!
The only mistake you have made is with D it is actually D minor chord!
I will prepare a new assignment in a couple of days! Good job!

That's cheating !, Dm is not in the key of A! tongue.gif
Now I know I've to be more careful with your assignments cool.gif

I have never said that it is in the key of A! It is though and Dmi can be a part of it! It's all depend on how you look at it!
If you will look at D melodic minor V will be A7 or A triad so that where this chord progression is coming from!
My assignments are challenging they might seem easy at first but when you will get deeper it is not that easy!

Was fantastic thanks, i went to Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), a lot of sun and free drinks smile.gif, too much for me indeed laugh.gif

Here I go with my transcription:

I V I ii I V IV V iii IV V IV V I

| C G | C | Dm C | G | F G | Em | F G | F G | C |

This one has been hard for me, i'm not sure of the result tongue.gif

The transcription is incorrect
Let's start by figuring out the bass notes only!

To hint you the first chord is D mi7
So the note is D

After hearing the first 3 chords a thousand times i've noticed that they may be the same as the firsts of Still got the blues:

Dm7 G Cmaj7

E |--5--5--3--3----|--3-----3--------3----------|----|----|----||
B |--6-----3-------|--5--------5--------5-------|----|----|----||
G |--5-----4-------|--4-----------4--------4----|----|----|----||
D |--7-----3-------|--5-------------------------|----|----|----||
A |--5-----5-------|--3-------------------------|----|----|----||
E |--------3-------|----------------------------|----|----|----||

Perfect! This is absolutely correct! Lets find 3 more chords after it!
P.S. You don't have to transcribe picking yet just chords smile.gif

This is being very hard for me...
I would say that the next 3 bass notes are B, A and D, but i'm not very convinced mad.gif

By the way, i've been thinking that you may be able to mentor me in other aspects apart from ear training, are you available?
Thanks.

B A G

I can't find the key (Dm - D or what???? and that's making it very difficult for me rolleyes.gif )

Very well! You got it perfect!
So far we have:
D - G- C - B - A - G ( a few more notes left! You are doing great! )
It is in the key of D melodic minor so it is kinda both:)
I love rock music and would love to help you out!!!
What recording software do you use? and what type of drum software do you have?
It is all starts with drums so it is very important to be able to create different types of drum tracks!

From the beginning:

Bass Notes: D - G- C - B - A - G - F - G - A - F - G - F - G - C

Chords as i think they are:
Dm7 G
Cmaj7
Bm7 Am
G
F G
Am
F G
F G
Cmaj7

If C is the I, then the chord progression would be: IIm7 - V - Imaj7 - VIIm7 - VIm - V - IV - V - IIm - IV - V - IV - V - Imaj7

Luckily this song was very beautiful cos my mother has had to listen to it a thousand times. I hope i got it right this time laugh.gif

Perfect!!! You did awesome! All chords are correct!!! smile.gif I am very happy you got it!
For the next assignment I have two thing that I would like you to work on
1) Rhythm
I did this lesson a while ago http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Funk-Rhythms/
Even if it is a funk style it will bring your rhythm skills to the next level! When I started playing I had a lot of issues with my timing and those are the exercises I came up with and it worked! So I am sure it will for you! smile.gif Let me know what you think and if you are interested in working on it!

2) Composition
This is a fun part that I really like! smile.gif
Each song has a structure that you need to decide on before you will do anything
Here is abbreviation that is used for it to make it easier to understand
Verse = A
Chorus = B
Bridge = C
Solo = Solo and a part you would like it to be played over
for example if you would like to have a solo over the verse do that - Solo A
I would like you to create a structure first and
also let's decide on the tempo is it gonna be a ballad or upbeat song?
Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything!
Nether

1) Rhythm
I'm actually working on funk rhythm guitar using a book hehehe, and i must say it has helped me a lot on my rhythm playing because it's difficult but it's also fun. Now i have a lot of new exercises thank's to your lesson. I'll be posting videos soon, at least i think i'm good enough to do the first ones, that way you will be able to see where i am.

2) Composition
Ok, let's start our first hit wink.gif
I think that i'm gonna choose a slow tempo, that way i'll be able to actually play what we composed tongue.gif . I think that 80bpm will be a safe bet.
I don't whant to to start making something weird so let's start with a classical structure
I - Intro
A - Verse
A - Verse
B - Chorus
Solo B - Solo (actually here i'm not quite sure if the normal thing is doing it over the chorus or over the verse)
A - Verse
O - Outro

Ok, so i've recorded my self playing the first rhythm. I played at 80bpm with a metronome:
http://soundcloud.com/jorge-fern-ndez/ritmo-funk-1

I'm a little bit after the beat in a few bars i think.

I've also done the same thing but instead of using a metronome i've used a drum doing the blacks and the 16th notes (I don't know if the are called black in English too, or another name like pulse or beat or something mellow.gif ).
Using the drums to remark my where i am it's much easier, so... should i use only the metronome or can i use the drums with the 16th notes?

By the way, i've loved your Reggae lesson, i should do this one when i finish with these funk rhythms laugh.gif

Awesome! Sounds very good! It sounded very nice! It is hard to tell if you are ahead of the beat because I don't hear a click to refer to. If for the next one you can add a click it would be much easier!
You can use drums or metronome it doesn't really matter! Either way will do.
Your structure looks very good! Now let's add drum track for now you can make a straight forward drum beat and keep it as a scratch! smile.gif
I am glad you liked my reggae lesson:) It was a fun one to do!

Hi Alex, i've done another two Funk Rhythms.
I've added a drum track for you to hear it. I didn't used it in the first one (i did use only metronome), but i needed it with the second one because i kept losing my self . Maybe with more practice i could do it only with metronome.

As you can hear, in this one i accidentally changed the pickup. I could have done another take but i kind of liked it.

The first licks sounds a little rushed but you did a very good job! And if you will continue practicing it with a metronome you will get amazing results! You have all it takes just need to practice and it will be perfect!
Second lick sounded awesome! A little shaky sometimes but nothing major! I loved the sound of this one! Very funky and tight!
What kind of guitar is it?

Hi Alex, I'm not sure what you wanted me to do regarding the composition. What i've done is using EZ Drummer to build the structure of the song that we talked about. I hope thats what you wanted.

http://soundcloud.com/jorge-fern-ndez/composition-with-alex

The track has 4 bars of Intro, 2 verses of 8 bars each, then 2 chorus (1 for the solo) of 8 bars, another verse of 8 bars and finally i added another Intro of 4 bars (EZ Drummer doesn't have Outros, at least not the pack of midis that i've been using)

I've also done another Funk Rhythm:

http://soundcloud.com/jorge-fern-ndez/ritmo-funk-4

P.S. The guitar that i've been using is an Ibanez GIO that came with a Jumpstart pack.

You did great with the first composition track!
Let's figure out chords now!
Start with the intro and the verse and I will help you develop it! And will explain some fun tricks! smile.gif

The second track sounded good but there is a timing issue this is a tricky figure because you have to be on the beat and it makes it harder! I would suggest to work on it with a metronome at a slower tempo and you will get it perfectly! smile.gif
P.S. Great guitar! This is one of my favorites from Ibanez! You are also can get a great clean sound out of it!
I liked it a lot! smile.gif

Very nice chord progression! I like it a lot! smile.gif
Let's add bass now! Do you have any midi program to write the bass or maybe even have a bass?
If not I can suggest some! smile.gif

You did very good! I like your bass line! I have a few suggestions
Add some EQ to the bass so there is more low frequencies Do you have any EQ or compressor plugins?
Also your guitar is rushing a little bit and played ahead of the drums try maybe move it back a little bit so it locked with a tempo
Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything!
