Thank you for tips, I made a new take Funk Blues Rythm
What do you think about it ? Progress on dynamic or not ?
Gabriel Leopardi
Dec 12 2016, 04:25 PM
Hi MisterM, yes! I can note important progress regarding dynamics and groove on this one. I can see how you are slowly starting to look more comfortable with this style and lesson. I recommend you to keep on practising this one diary to get more and more familiar with this style. The chord voicing is tricky but your fingers start to look comfortable even with the weirdest ones.
Great job!

I'm not at the studio now so I prefer to judge it when I could hear the take with my studio monitors. The first REC of the new year? That sounds great!

Hi MisterM! That's a good take man. Everything sounds tight and in tune. I don't notice really important issues to fix, excepting the last two faster licks that still have room to sound tighter.
The only thing that I'd like to mark is something that other instructors and me commented in previous lessons and it's related to your left hand movement. There is some extra rotation when playing some patterns that adds movements that don't can be an issue when playing faster licks, and that don't look natural (and affects groove) when playing faster patterns. For example it happens for example at 00:13 and 00:35.

Thx Gab
I work on precision on blues line, other take in a 10/15 days --- I hope with progress
Funky Blues Rythm. zero progress, I play day after day, but I think I reached my technical limits. I think that I am going to subject it to the REC section in January, 2017
Also, I work this lesson, after 13 days (15 mn/day) - I'm able to play entire lesson 75% speed.
What do you think about tone, timing and technique ?

Hi MisterM! Great job here!
I think that the funk rhythm lesson has reached a very good level. It's true that there is more room to improve it, but I think that you should start working on some other similar stuff to continue working on your rhythm skills. This lesson had a very important impact in your playing, and the progress that you've got is impressive. Congrats.
The new lesson is on the right track. I don't find any important technique or timing issues to fix. It sounds good. The tone is also suitable for the backing and scales played. Everything is right for me, great job!

Hi mate, I'm getting back from vacation so I'll be checking all the pendent stuff during the next days. Sorry for the inconvenience, I've started a thread to notify students before I've left.
While writing this, I'm checking your Funky Blues take and it's really good! I think that you've been able to improve your groove, and also your dynamics work. The overall feel is very enjoyable, so I think that the hard work is showing really interesting results. I would keep this one in your diary practice, and work on some similar stuff in order to keep on polishing your rhythm work.
What's next? What are your next goals and plans?

Hi Gab
No problem, You already make a lot for the community GMC
Your takes sound very consistent. I don't find any relevant issues to mark. Maybe the faster part of the Stymmetric lesson could be tighter, but it's not bad at all. Your job is very impressive.
The lessons that you are working on, and the ones that you are planning to start are very cool. That Stephane's lesson is very effective and Skunk Funk is very creative and will take your funk rhythm to a new level. Go for them!

Hi Gab

I posted my take "Symmetric HTWT Scale" at the workshop. I hope that it's ok for you. It's difficult to make better.

Jan 3 2017, 07:26 PM
Hi MisterM,
it's ok, it's always good to receive feedback from different instructors, mostly when you feel stuck with a lesson. The lesson is tricky because the phrasing is very uncommon. I think that your take is not bad, you play most of the licks smooth and tight. There are just a few moments where you are not going tight but you'll be if you give this one more days. I don't think that you need to play it too much but at least twice everyday will keep you going forward with these licks.

Hi MisterM, well done with these ones. I only hear some unwanted noises in the third idea of the video. It's very small but it's there, work on cleaning it. The other two ones sound good to me.
I work for 12 days II V I My opinion, the level 5 an error. This lesson is extremely difficult.
Several times I wanted to abandon so much the timing is atypical.
Certain sections have a crazy speed, I was angry... I say : Why I learnt this lesson ? Today, I am capable of playing is 75 % of the speed and I considere that it is an exploit of technique.
I shall make a video in a few days but I do not think of being capable of playing is 100 %. Do I have to consider this lesson as a failure?
This lesson makes me progress, but it is a big questioning.
Gabriel Leopardi
Jan 18 2017, 01:37 AM
Hi mate, that's an amazing lesson!
It's really cool to see that it makes you get all those feelings. It's true that it seems a bit over 5 but it's always difficult to put those numbers because everything is so relative. I could say that Diego can play things that are a lot more difficult and faster than that so maybe this is based on his 1 to 10 level. What's the level that you'd suggest?
I wouldn't consider this lesson as a failure, I would consider it as a great motivator!
Keep going my friend.

Hi Gab
Thank you for your answer. I know that it is difficult for the instructors to estimate a level. Things are so easy for you, it is not obvious to remind to you when you were novice.
When I learnt this lesson, I have one a certain ease with first licks. step by step, the timing, the dexterities became more complicated. This lesson is long and very technical, she asks for a lot of motivation. In comparison with the previous lessons, I estimate a level 6.
However, today, I do not try to increase my rank, it is not the important thing. The important is to learn lessons which I shall know how to conclude in Workshop.
Rec section is has every time a new victory, I win the trust and that's it my motivation.
Here is a video after 15 days of hard work, there is still some work on the timing and the dynamics, but I hope to play is 100 % soon.
I continue parrallele, Blues line, Funk single line, legato ben, alternate picking thirds

Nice, this is on the right track. I note that timing is not tight yet, but it's very close. The more you play this one, the groovier it will sound, but please focus on it when practicing. Groove and dynamics are very important elements on this style of solos. Also, it would be good if you can put your guitar louder in the mix, or add more presence to your tone to make it sound clearer in the vid.
Keep going mate.

Man! That's so awesome! I'm amazed of how much you could adjust this one. I could follow the whole progress of this lesson and it's so cool to say that you are a killer student and guitarist, and a very inspiring person.
Also, your tone on that take is superb. Congrats my friend.
I wanted play with pleasure without hard work technique. I need to work on timing and bends... What do you think about dynamic ?
Gabriel Leopardi
Feb 7 2017, 04:33 AM
Hi mate, this is a good take as always. However, I think that there is more room to improve each of the elements that you've asked. It's not dramatic, but you can improve your timing, the precision of your bending, and add more dynamics work to this one.
I've seen you having important progress regarding these elements to I'm sure that you'll master this lesson pretty soon. Also, your tone needs some tweaking. It's lacking some presence / definition compared to the original lesson.
Keep on the hard work.

Hi gab
New take, better ?
I work on alternate workout. This lesson is very strong... Sometimes I work it but never for a very long time, the reason is that after a few weeks it irritates me.
I have a break, I play other things, I play it later when I want to progress on alternate picking Today, I play 110 BPM, 120 BPM soon. I have some difficulty but I work on slowly
12/02/2017 110 BPM
01/05/2016 100 BPM

Hi MisterM,
Good job! I note important progress on that Keith Scott's lesson. All the elements that I've marked in my previous comment are now improved and I can say that this take would pass smoothly at REC. I really enjoy your tone, and feeling on this one, specially your vibrato.
About the AP lesson, it's awesome to see the progress through those 3 vids. This kind of AP exercises can be boring after some days of practice, so it's good to have an archive with different ones to choose a different one any time you get tired of it.

Feb 17 2017, 02:01 PM
Good! I think that the new take on Keith is pretty close to the previous one. Your overall playing is really good. I don't find any relevant issue to fix there, maybe some little details regarding vibrato quality (in a few case/s), any bend that is not 100% precise and a small very small timing issue, but seriously nothing to worry about. I think that you are ready to move forward.
The sweeps sound good and clean. There is more room to make it sound with smoother timing. It can be tricky to be precise with timing at slow tempo when playing sweep picking, but being able to do it gives you a great right hand control, so keep on practicing!

Hi MisterM! Great job with this lesson. It's curious to see that the faster version sounds more precise than the other one. Every part, even the last fast lick sounds better. This is a good thing, however, being able to play at slow speeds is also important, so try playing this one twice every day at slower speeds too.
About the vibrato thing, I think that Ben already clarified it. Darius refers to the "vibration", so the up and down movement, and said that it wasn't regular and connected with the groove of the song. This makes avoids the vibrato sound consistent and related to the track.
Is it clear now?

Yes I Understantood things about vibrato. It is not natural for me.I need some time, but I understood how to work.

about vibrato : on the video "04 sec" my first slide and vibrato is not very good, my finger doing upward again..... I shall do better on the next one

Hi mate,
I have to start that I love your tone on this video. What are you using?
This take is really good, I enjoy every part a lot, and I only find relevant issues in the faster parts (second half) where you have some hand sync issues, and some little timing problems. The other sections sound tight and with a good use of dynamics.

Hello Gab,
Thank you, I am happy to read your comment, it is reassuring.
I continue the work on funk. Every day, I play
- Funky blues rythm My first recording on REC Section is not decisive, I have to learn again a lot above.
- Shunk Funk It is difficult to obtain a clean playing. Step by step, I improve it. I play only the first sequency, I shall learn the continuation later
Also, I work on HTWT Scale I can again progress on the precision and the speed
I shall post videos by a few weeks. I am happy, I have the impression to have still progressed, I keep hard work

Good plan! Yes, your progress is really clear and it's based on hard work and discipline. You focus on those lessons that make you work on the things that you like but that you haven't mastered and I can see how your overall playing is getting more and more precise and expressive. Your videos always look and sound great too.
I'll go to the REC section now to grade your takes.
Keep on the great job!

Hi Gab, thank for your com at Workshop, I'm happy
This morning, I made 2 videos
First : Shunk Funk It's really difficult to play on the beat. I work on 20 mn per day since two month.
I have a lot of work about timing, muting and tone, I keep the way
Second : The 3 king blues I work 90% speed. Several licks are very fast. I made 2 test with stratocaster and Gibson
What do ytou think about them ?
Gabriel Leopardi
Mar 25 2017, 06:08 PM
Hi MisterM! Great to see you working hard as always.
The funky lesson obviously needs more practice to make it sounds tighter, and more connected with the groove. I've seen you improving lessons that sounded like this take many times so I'm sure that you'll improve this one really soon. Then, dynamics would be the following thing to improve.
It's really interesting to hear the other lesson with both fender and gibson guitars. I love both. The tone is so different but I think that both could work great for this style. Maybe the gibson fits a bit better? I don't know...
Your playing also needs timing adjustment, as well as more precision with bending.
Keep on the hard work.
Manu RASSE

Hi Gab,
I played every day, in the morning and in the evening. I practised exercises on the fast parts. I chose the telecaster, I think that the sound is better.
What do you think about it..... REC Section ?
Gabriel Leopardi
Apr 2 2017, 09:51 PM
Hi MisterM, this is sounding good. There is some work to do in order to polish some sections that have unwanted noises, hand sync issues (00:15), and also some bends that don't reach the correct pitches. But these are mostly small details that you'll be improving soon. Also, remember to not hurry up your vibrato. Let the note sound and then add it gradually.
Your tone is perfect for this lesson.
You could share this one at REC for more comments, or you could work a few days. It's up to you.
