i figured i would make a topic .Whos the best guitarist you have ever heard?They dont have to play 300bpm or be the fastest shreder alive thats not what makes a guitarist the best in my opinion.Just by the stuff they have made and tone that they have who's your opinion.Im going to say Eddie Van Halen,many will disagree but remember it's the best guitarist that YOU have heard.

Yeah he is so great. One of my favorite guitarists.

The best I have heard to date is probably Stevie Ray Vaughan or maybe Phil Keaggy.
A lot of shredders are fast and sound great but I like guitarists that can "sing with their fingers" if you know what I mean. It gets kinda subjective

I'm sorry for being so incredibly boring, but Mikael Åkerfeldt, followed by Peter Lindgren. Mikael has got everything in my ears, for me everything he touches is perfect.

I have never seen a guitarist put more heart,soul, or passion into his playing than Vaughn.Also never seen a guitarist use bends like he did.

In this time and place, I'd like to be across between Steve Vai and Marcus Lavendell - both very melodic when they want to be, and make their technique serve the music, not the other way around.

The best ive ever heard is Dave Murray and Steve Vai.

Dave and Steve just have that soul in there playing that makes me just....feel good, i love there style, there are my 2 biggest influences.

An Honorable Mention though is Bob Zabek, incredible Music, unbeliveable tone, amazing abilties, just a PERFECT guitarist.

Hardtail...I know exactly what you mean. Gilmore is one of those guitarists who definitley makes his guitar speak words.

As far as shredding goes, IMO, I prefer it to be done as PART of a solo, but I dont care for it being played for the ENTIRE solo. I feel like the guitar is screaming at me, like there is alot of angst involved. I hate someone screaming at me, I would rather hear words, like Gilmore or Carlos Santana

Petrucci- Technically he has it going on. In the world of melodic shred he is among my favorites. You can tell he puts alot of time into his music and basically has it figured out how he is going to phrase and what not without hesitation.

Paul Gilbert- No one and I mean No one accents there speed runs better then Paul gilbert, besides maybe rusty cooley. But Paul has opened up doors in the world of shred guitar,and hes one of those artists I can keep watching videos of and not get bored.

Yngwie Malmsteen- Well most of you dont like him but I for one do. He may be the most arrogant guitar player, but he sure as heck can back it up. He was one of the main original Neo-Classical guitar players.

Satch-Hes just godly, what else to say ?

Steve Vai- I think overall steve vai is among the best today. Tell me the first time any of you watched tender surrender your werent like, WOW

Marcus Lavendell- We are lucky to have a teacher on the site with a gigantic tone and massive technique

Muris- Muris is truely a gifted man, his vast versitlity and wide arrange of tones and what not makes him another amazing addition to the site

I have Heard Many of the Great guitarists who are dead and alive.

But, My Jaw has Never dropped like it did when I saw Marcus Lavendell videos for the first time.

I can't believe this guy isn't as Well known as he Should be.

he has got to be the Best Guitarist I've ever Heard IMO, And that's saying something.

Opeth are by far my favourite band and have been for a few years now so I would have to say Mikael Åkerfeldt.




I noticed a couple of days ago when I was reading a few of his posts (The Proofs) that he was quite a prick and when I looked at his profile I saw he had been banned, was this anything to do with the above mentioned disagreement... or is this best not talked about?

Steve Vai is IMO the best... just listen "Whispering a prayer", just amazing !!

Ahh... so many to choose from... I think that Satch and Vai are probably the best... but there are so many others to consider! There are many others that I love as well, Gilmour, Santana, Page... and people like Frusciante, who, while he is not necessarily that great of a guitarist skill-wise, he can play amazingly... it's kind of hard to describe. But I guess I would have to go with Satch or Vai. I think that skill is not anywhere near as important as soul... which is why I have problems with players that are too technical, like Paul Gilbert... I mean, he can play very fast, and he definitely knows his scales, but that's about it.

Kirk Hammet just because he was the first guitarist that I went crazy about and I still think hes the bomb but these guys are deffinitly right up there with hammet:

I do have to put marcus as easily the best guitarist I've ever heard who doesn't have his own band or album. Even among the other guitar players of the world he ranks really high. Muris and Gabriel as well! All three of you have really inspired me with what you do.

Others would be, Mark Knopfler who has just a perfect style and tone, Eddie Van Halen who can make anything sound amazing, Gary Moore who has some really touching stuff, Gilmour for his perfect phrasing, Billy Corgan, Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'brien for their epic alternative rock solos and spacey numbers etc, Vai, Satch and Gilbert for achieving amazing technique without losing the music, Slash even if only for the classics he's given us, J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr for having a pretty distinctive virtuoso-grunge kind of style which I find irresistible, Kurt Cobain, Neil Young, John Frusciante, Kelly Jones and Matt Bellamy who all have in common a rather low technique, but amazing rhythmic placement and note choice kind of style. Page, Beck, Hendrix, Clapton and the other 60's-70's blues guitar heroes, Santana and Brian May both have great tone and technique I think, I love their stuff, Kirk Hammett for some really classic stuff I think (even though many would like to disagree), Keith Richards, John Fogerty, Joe Strummer, Buddy Guy and Buddy Holly, Trey Anastasio, Dave Mustaine, I could go on for ever. Can't pick a best

Kirk was my hero at one time but as time went on i just got into harder things.But i will always love metallica as they got me started on guitar.

One of my all time favorites

Thanks guys! Right now i am in the process of composing TOTALLY different style than i was planning earlier so it will take me lots of time. I got sick of traditional instrumental-rock in style of Vai and Satch (and other similar musicians) as there are 5 millions guitarists releasing copy/pasted music and nothing new can be heard there.

As you all know of my love towards symphonic/film-score metal i can just tell you that my records will be filled with orchestra stuff (maybe 1 or 2 traditional instrumental rock songs sneak in) and i will share them with you when i feel it is ready to sneak out of my room!

Back on topic, fav guitarists: Rusty Cooley, Luca Turilli, Enric Garcia.

Rusty is the best shredder ever exists (IMO), but I don't like his songs I supose that you also like OUTWORLD, isn't it ?

Yep! i love Outworld and i like all of his solo album songs. I guess he's just the guitarist that suits me perfectly! Same goes for Luca Turilli so what i want is to create a combination of those 2 guys.

You guys ever heard of John Kimbrough from the power trio Walt Mink?
