hey, sup guys. i just joined and am a relitivly new guitarist - i've been at it for about 3 weeks practicing for about 2-3 hours a day.

does any one have any suggestions on how to start?

3 weeks and already into speed picking??? I think you should back up and start building a foundation. Say with Power chords, open chords. Do the beginner lessons.
When that's done I will suggest what Robin use to say, go with the Kris 101 lessons.

I go back through to Pavel’s alternating lessons every time I play. While I am not quite as fast/or clean as our buddy Pavel is, I am getting closer. To do these lessons you must first memorize them, a Must do

Then be able to play them very slow with perfect alternate picking. On Pavel alternating lesson #1 if you start with a down stroke you must end with an up each time you move your fret hand to another location. So each measure of 16th notes ends with the opposite stoke. If it does not, you did it wrong.

You must have a metronome and use it. If you do not, you could add many years of only decent growth.

I have been playing for 20 years, and have grown more in 8 months here at GMC. However, GMC has showed me the truth, I now list the truth in my blue signature at the bottom of this post.


Learn and memorize Pavel’s alternating lesson 1

Be able to play it with your metronome at a slow speeds, clean and right stokes.

As much as I have played in my life it took me like 10 hours of practice to do these two things. And be error free.

I agree... Guitar is something that takes a lot of time and dedication. While I have no doubt that someday you be able to play this, I would recommend that you start with something simpler. And don't forget practice! This is the number one thing... Also, don't forget to learn about music theory. While it may seem boring and unimportant at first, it's a very important part of creating new things and making things sound good in general! Try checking out Andrew's theory lessons for this...

Anyways, welcome to GMC! It has to be the most professional, helpful, and friendly guitar websites on the Internet that I've found... I've only been here for a few weeks, and I feel like I've learned so much! Have fun, and practice!



Heh, my old guitar teacher used to say the exact same thing! He said that practice makes perfect, but if you practice incorrectly, then you'll form bad habits... Sorry, just randomly noticed that!
