The "L" meaning is the most common question in my lessons so here what I've replied in one of them:

"A tie is a curved line connecting the heads of two notes of the same pitch, indicating that they are to be played as a single note with a duration equal to the sum of the individual notes' note values.
It's not important if you are reading tabs because we don't use note values. The "L" is generated when I export the tabs from the guitar pro where you have all the note values (including the tied notes)."

Hm, how exactly do tied, ghost, and grace notes work?

I see them often in tablature but aren't sure how to do them...

It's just a new note value (longer... if you have a eight note conected with curved line to another eight note, that would be the same that if you had a quarter note). The "L" symbol doens't matter when you are reading tabs... it appears when you export a guitar pro file to a text file.
