Over the years I've got stuck to shows like Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, Start Trek TOS and another oldie Space 1999. The TNS I gladly watched but not all episodes, DS9 I never followed and if I remember well it was because it was on a channel I didn't have.

Now it's so easy to catch up on shows since they come in DVD boxes that aren't that expensive.

Can you recommend me a show that comes in a DVD box which is of SG-1 entertainment quality? Sci-Fi
I mean, I like Heroes and Prisonbreak but that's nothing I'd spend money to get in a box. Rather wacth it on TV with the family.
I'm positive we don't get all the great Sci-Fi shows in Sweden and when we do they have a hard time finding good airing time so it doesn't seem too popular a genre here.

Battlestar Galactica is running on the TV now but I never seem to find the time to watch it. Is it good?

If you aren't exclusively tied into space based sci-fi, the last three series of Doctor Who are most certainly worth getting on DVD.

One of the best ever.....

i dont know if youd class it as Sci-Fi.... but it was on the Sci-Fi channel for a while sooo...

Sliders

the first 3 seasons are good (each with LOTS of episodes) after that they pretty much change the entire cast and it goes way downhill.
Check out the first 3 seasons though. you can get them in a box set.

If you like older tv shows you should ofc watch some Star Trek!

1) Doctor Who - Going back over 40 years. The 4th Doctor (Tom Wood) has been my favorite. And Peri my favorite Companion as she is built like a brick ****house (taught you some colloquial English there). However, the new series is fantastic, all three years. Rose as companion in series 1 and 2 was fantastic. And the companion in series 3 grew on me. And I expect the 4th to be great also, as the new companion is going to be good. She played in Christmas Special between year 2 and 3. Nothing beat Doctor Who, or even comes close in my book. An American Movie was made in the 90's, but it is only so-so, I don't consider it real Doctor Who.

2) For Comedy, Red Dwarf.

3) I think that the last Star Trek Series "Star Trek Enterprise" was real good, and not appreciated. Very good acting, characters, and it was fresh.

I tend not to like much of the current stuff, other than Who. They seem to all want to put some ideology into them, push dippy doo media entertainment cultural values on you, rather than just be entertaining. The last Star Trek series did a little of that, it was annoying. But only a couple times. Red Dwarf is just funny and quite creative.

Doctor Who has had a few series where it clearly has been making a point of how TV is sucking out the brains of people in society. Well an Alien got into the TV sets and did that physically. Clearly this was a metaphor. Kind of hypocritical for sure, but I respect that. Killed my TV long ago to protect my brain, only watch selective items on tape or DVD.

Why just the last 3? I think they are great. But so are earlier ones. Doctors 1-3 are pretty old time, but still interesting. 4 is great. 5 and 6 pretty good. 7 went down hill I feel a bit (last series before break). The movie does not count in my book.

Even though they did not have the budgets in series back then, they made up for it with scripts, and characters.
This is why I consider much of current crap on tv banal. Just effects, other than that pretty shallow, predictable. Sometimes a movie will come out, and get a lot of attention. I won't watch it for awhile, then check it out. And 10 minutes later turn it off, just effects, boring, predictable.

In some old series they did not have the money, so they had no choice but to really do things in a special way with scripts and nuances, character studies. But you have to be someone who appreciates that kind of stuff.

edit: if you are interested in looking at these on youtube, well, I accept is is not right, stealing in a way, but what the heck, you can do a search on "Runaway Bride" to see an example, the Christmas Special after Rose left. Actually the entire 3 years are on youtube, but the guy codes them to avoid detection. Accunts with Who have pretty much been eliminated by youtube, you used to be able to find most everything.

Here is a nice tribute to Rose, done to music.

Played by Billie Piper, former pop star, better actor. I am a pretty tough guy I think, but I cried seeing this.

Oh, the original series are excellent. Peter Davidson (the 5th Doctor) was my first. But I've got quite a healthy collection of the old stuff, which my 10 year old son is now into in a big way. As an introduction though, the more recent stuff gets an episode all wrapped up in 45 minutes, so they're a gentler way into the addiction that soon takes over. smile.gif

For those who didn't see it, here's the current Doctor (played by David Tennant) meeting his fifth incarnation (Peter Davidson), in a 5 minute piece for BBC's Children in Need biggrin.gif

Watched the series in the 70's for the first time and us kids played the adventures outdoors. At that time there were two channels only so us kids pretty mutch watched the same shows biggrin.gif

I had a vague memory of it, looked it up at amazon and yeah, I think they made a try airing that series here but it failed.

Also as you suggest I will try to find out more about the old Dr Who. I'm a sucker for old sci-fi aswell.
Have the complete Gojira box (except for the latest Godzilla movie) and another big time favorite is "Destroy all monsters", not a series but a great old sci fi movie.

+ 1 for all the fkalicj and Tank say about Dr Who - recent incarnation with Tennant and Piper have been great - my little one see's Billie as a bit of a role model - which can't be bad.

Sliders as Muntahunta says is over looked unfairly and Red Dwarf as per fkalich is a legend in sci fi comedy.. Don't think any one's mentioned it but I also like Andromeda.

Cheers,
Tony

I absolutely loved the first 3 seasons biggrin.gif but i agree with what you said about what happened after, dang, they should have stopped at that episode with the noisy garden door tongue.gif (if you remember biggrin.gif )

I also agree with The Uncreator and JVM, firefly is awesome, and the movie is pretty damn good!

Doctor Who was very tired when they retired it in the 90s - but this new version is a completely different animal - its very well written, great effects and some cool story lines.

There is also a spinoff called Torchwood which is more adult in content than Doctor who which is really aimed at kids (though loved be adults!)

I really liked Andromeda. Damn, I need to quit watching this stuff, don't have time, now look what you have done. I had forgotten about it. And now I am going to check out Sliders, because of you, and I don't have time for this1

I highly recommend Star Trek Enterprise. It was the least successful. Trek fanatics would stone me for this, but it is my favorite of all of them.

Here is the theme song. Beautiful, inspirational, one of my favorite themes. Trek fanatics hated it.

Always has had an adult following, how else do you explain Peri?

Although I though I like Peri, more than just eye candy.

The Doctor before Tennant was good, only one year, but did a fine job I thought. Like them both.

Sorry mate smile.gif but as time sinks go there are much worse ways to spend your time smile.gif tongue.gif .

Andromeda though is, of the newer sci fi one of the best smile.gif

Sliders is one of my fav series. along with red dwarf. i have the complete collection of both and if i ever get bored i randomly pick a dvd tongue.gif

sliders is actually very intellectual but doesnt seem to be. i loved the world where the proffessor recreates the atom bomb to save the world from an asteroid.

i know what im watching tonight.

Which episode with the squeeky gate? there are a few. are you talking about the one with the "azure gate bridge" instead of golden gate?
Slammer
Did you ever watch Babylon 5?
Saoirse O'Shea
Good call Slammer - Babylon 5 was great as well. Sadly I missed a lot as Channel 4 (or was it 5?) in the UK never seemed to have a consistent broadcast time sad.gif .

I was careful in my wording wink.gif I agree it always had an adult following, but it was aimed at least initially at kids (wasted on them though IMO!)

Nice Vid - I think by then they were struggling for ratings wink.gif
Vinicitur
Battlestar Galactica is probably the big Sci-Fi series right now. But my favorites are still Babylon 5 and Doctor Who. smile.gif
Zephyr
Firefly, Doctor Who, and Stargate SG-1, are defanitley biggrin.gif my favorites! I can't believe they stopped Firefly, it was one of the best shows ever, in my opinion... unsure.gif

Firefly/Serenity was great! I really liked the Dresden Files but Sci-Fi channel canned it not due to ratings but that it had too many female viewers ohmy.gif . There's a petition out there to bring it back but the guy that played Harry Dresden has already found work elsewhere. We'll see......
