A note to our beginner students: "1" and "6" (etc) when speaking about chords - in this case refers to the scale degrees from which the chords are constructed.
In order to fully understand this you first need to learn the scales mentioned in the beginning (Ab Major F# Major). Once you do, you will realize that the chord notes are taken from these scales.
Once you have understand this you will be able to easily "borrow" chord progressions and cool tonalities from famous songs, creating your own unique blend of styles using theory.
