Polyphia is one of the most creative and fresh guitar oriented bands at this moment. They are constantly evolving and creating new sounds. They are considered an instrumental progressive rock/metal band and sometimes also described as Math Rock, but they also have strong influences from modern pop, hip hop and EDM.
In this lesson, I’ll cover the phrasing style of both Tim Henson and Scott LePage (Polyphia’s guitarists). The tune and melodies are based on their song Amour, from the amazing album ‘Renaissance’ (2016). Their phrasing is very melodic and groovy, and they make a big use of slides, silence, rhythm variation and palm muting. I think that we can really hear the pop influences in their melodic work.
The composition is in B minor, and the tempo is 115 bpm. The chord progression is:
