So eMGie inspired me to just share this.
Back in April I had an idea for writing some orchestral stuff based on Dante's Divine Comedy, this first part being "about" when he "wakes up" in the dark forrest, before he attempts to wander up the mountain (which was supposed to be the next piece).
Imagine the dark trees surrounding him, unknown creatures sturring, uncanny winds in the trees etc.

I might go back to this project some time in the future, who knows. Let me know what you think though. It is best heard in stereo (I can't recommend listening on a laptop)
Full Version: Another Orchestral Topic
Very nice piece, there's a lot of potential for a masterpiece here, in my opinion. Your motifs and ideas are very clear. Yet somehow I feel they're lacking instability in it's dynamics, WHICH IS SOMETHING I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'D LIKE! I tend to over-dramatize my own compositions with expression markings everywhere and have really abrupt and short sounding phrases. As a result of that my orchestral stuff usually sounds uneasy and weary, which(when hearing this piece) I really thought may be fitting. There's some really nice contrast here which I would like to bring out further, like when the flute melody is echo'd close to the middle.
It reminds me a lot of the darker sides of stravinsky or mahler. Very nicely done.
One last thought is that with all these lovely themes introduced, you have a lot of material that could stem from it and make the story "complete". You've introduced motifs that would be very useful for a continued part.

Wou! I really like your composition man. I can feel on a movie while I listen to it. The only thing that I didn't like is that the pan of the instruments in the mix. I think that you should pan 100% left and 100% right, or maybe add an stereo camera that made the listened feel that the orquesta in in a same place. I have just that comment. Keep on working on this style of music!

Or composed anything for 3-4 years or so. As mentioned above it was supposed to be a mix of djent and classical and maybe more genres as well. Perhaps I'll start thinking about it again.

I'm not sure what you mean with the panning. I think some of the instruments are panned all the way to left and right side. Maybe I didn't pan 100%. Will have a look tomorrow

- this is so good, that I wouldn't listen to it at night if I was home alone - which I am most of the time
- you should MOST DEFINITELY continue working on a lengthier composition based on Dante's opera It provides real inspiration for certain!

Mate - it depends on what will happen later in the tune - as of right now, this orchestral atmosphere would be spoiled by djenty/ rockish stuff - my 2 cents, of course

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just can't see myself sticking to the orchestral type of thing. Well, I might, but then I might also make a non-orchestral or mixed version. We'll see...

Hehe - I also like the idea of making various renditions based on different orchestration styles. It is a totally different thing
Diversity is very important but, also, finishing things is important as well. People tend to react well when they see a finished product, so I encourage you to finish the orchestral parts of the whole story and publish them!

Next will be Dante trying to climb up a mountain side towards the sun, out of the forest, where he meets three animals, a lion, a leopard and a she-wolf that forces him back into the dark forest.
Compositionally I liked it and it rather reminded me of Lutoslowski meets Starvinsky (if you can imagine that).
Mix wise it's ok but there are a few things to think about. I think the actual balance of some of the instruments was a little odd and resulted in some being quite some way in the background, and vice versa where you'd normally expect them as more foreward in a morec onventional orchestra. I also felt that some parts needed more articulation and individual dynamics. It also felt that a few had a different reverb then others, which for me was a little strange.
Can't be sure though as this was streamed on a laptop and I wasn't paying close attention.
(FWIW the mastering setup isn't on the internet and so we don't play streamed and compressed audio on it.)

I'll have a look at it for sure at some point, but be sure to try playing it on a non-laptop. I know when I listened to it on my girlfriend's laptop that I was thinking: "Hey, this sounds all wrong now!". Obviously not saying the mix is great at all, but laptop listening never helps
