No Eddie,you're absolutely right,
lots of distortion usually hides some mistakes,specially when it comes to picking.
So you did right thing with moving on clean sound and practicing that way.
Just don't forget to use distortion from time to time as well,
with clean you don't have to do much muting
and you'll still wanting to play some stuff on dist.
So use both for practicing,clean and dist.
Add even acoustic guitar to your routine,that's good way to
upgrade your picking much more.
