Iv owned a yamaha pacifica 112 for a number of years and am now ready too buy a new guitar. I want a really nice guitar that will be a joy too play. Im sure I want too buy a Fender Strat and am willing to spend upto £800 on it. With all the models out there iv very confused on which one i should get.

I love to play rock, blues and most of my favourite guitarists play Strats, John Frusciante being one of them. So i know a strat is perfect of the stlye of music i like.

I like the fender american special HSS strats as well as the American Standards.

I just don't know which guitar too get a pure strat? or somthing like the HSS
It will be the only guitar i will play for a number of years so versatility is a must, im getting very confused and frustrated with all the chioces i have. And don't know a great deal about guitars so i don't want to end up getting the wrong guitar for me.

Can anyone give me a little advise?

My strat is SSS, but I must agree a HSS is way more versatile. It all boils down to the sound you dig, and the songs you wish to play with it. As far as I know american specials are the closest it gets to standards. Both of them look gorgeous... The choice is yours!

The guitar for you is the one you like the feel and sound of. Simple as that. You have to go try a few models out. I think the amercal special is nice. A Standard is a step up, I'd have the pickups switched for stacked dittos. (stacked is humbucker solution in single coil format)
But that's me. Like I said, I suggest you go out play different brands and models. smile.gif

If possible, go try and feel those guitars in a music store.
Feel wich one fits best (sound, feeling).
That was the solution for me after long doubting!

I love Fender Koa Strats. They are cheap but great. And I'd change the pick ups for Texas Specials.

I own an American standard 3 tone sunburst.... Man I love that guitar.... It use to be a sss configuration but I swap the bridge pickup for a Dimarzio Chopper. You should really go to a store that sells some Fender guitar because I remember before buying mine I tried more than 30 strats and only one was perfect....

Guitar s a personal thing you really have to try it...

I play on a Japanese Squire strat which I adore. It play so good and I'll never sell it. When the frets are worn I'll get them replaced. I compared it so many times to a American models and conclusion is that I definitely don't need an upgrade. So it comes down to personal preferences that someone mentioned I guess. And no, it's not poor man talking kinda reasoning because I do own an am deluxe tele and other guitars too. I could get one if I needed it but I don't. smile.gif If you find a special or even Mexican, if it feels good in your hands - buy it.

I advise you to get HSS Strat. Even if you get any of the modern Strat guitars, they all have body pickup cavities for HSH configuration (so later on you can insert hums, even if you have SSS). This is not a big problem at all.
American Special looks fine to me. I tried several in the store an they are all good. Just make sure you find the piece that will fit in your hand. Strat is a vintage style guitar and you need to play it loud in order to get a proper sound out of it.

I will agree with those who said to go try out the guitars in the store. While you don't have as big a selection, you can find some that just have something special about them. I tried out a sunburst american strat last year and it was probably the best playing guitar I've ever touched. Something about it just made music ooze naturally from me. I should have bought it, even though I didn't have the $900+ dollars that it cost. There is a big difference in those guitars, so you should try them out and find a great one, in my opinion.

Well, strats are my kinda thing mate!

I have an Eric Johnson model which I love but there is more to consider than just pickups so heres my opinions on the current range:

Road Worns: amazingly good guitars, far better than their mexican standard stablemates. I think they are a little overpriced, I've seen them go on fleabay for around the 400 mark which is superb, they have the tex mex pups which are very good, if not as good as texas specials, the wearing on them is a little generic at this price point but they do have a bit more mojo than their new cousins.

American specials: again these are flavour of the moment, 9.5 radius, texas specials, greasebucket tone circuit is all good so I struggle to see where theyve cut the price on these so it must be on the materials used, thats ok but that being the case you must try one of these because that very fact means you cant change it if you dont like it. The HSS have the passing lane circuita which would be a nice feature but it also has the LSR roller nut, ok it works great but it looks like your guitar has braces, not nice!

Am std: Ive kept a close eye on these and have to say the newer models are among the best ive played, Fender have really raised their game and the Am std's offer superb value for money, its hard to see the difference over the specials but its there in the wood selection and finish, things you cant change! also the neck finishes are ultra smooth, a lot of people crow about Nitro but it can be a sticky nightmare on a new axe (Take it from me, mine was nitro!).

Deluxe: The deluxe are where I go off Fender, ok they still have some great features (Compound boards, better materials etc) but I really dont think they are worth another 350-400 over a standard, certainly not in terms of tone, maybe in bragging rights but who cares about that? the cork sniffer of the range!

HSS: A HSS strat is suitable for all kinds of music but the heaviest of metal, the pickups are usually lower output (As it should be) so you get your gain through the amp, the only problem is that HSS guitars are considerably less desirable than the SSS versions, not a problem if you plan to keep it forever but their second hand value is considerably less, same goes for outlandish colours, better to stick to the more vintage selections if you think you may move it on at some point. Ive actually put a SD little 59 in the bridge of mine which sounds great, maybe not as full as a traditional HB but still gives it more girth in solos.

Ebay: there are some complete bargains out there mate, ive just picked up a USA std telecaster only eighteen months old for 500 quid and theres seriously not a mark on it! I saw a USA G&L Legacy go for 550 too the other day, virtually brand new! You will get a storming example for around 600 quid and not as good giiged ones for around the 450-500 mark, seriously its worth keeping a close eye on the bay!

Hope that helped, as you can see, I like my fenders! laugh.gif

I have an American Standard SSS, and an American Deluxe HSS. The HSS is the best pickup combo in my opinion. It also has the S1 switching option for a lot more pickup settings...9 as opposed to 5 on the Standard. Both are awesome guitars though, and if you find one or the other for the right price, you won't be in bad shape with either.
