And here's a recording for the second legato-lesson by Muris @ 100bpm. That's the fastest I can go with this technique at the moment and it's far from perfect.. I can notice that your fingers needs more legato training! The lesson is sounding good but it's not sounding fluently. The lesson is a great choice and it needs more days of practice. Did you worked on Ben's land of legato series? Sorry - changed that, now you can watch it OK, here are the breach top5: You can take the whole album "Soma" by My Sleeping Karma, but especially the Interlude-Tracks are my favs Great! I'm now listening to Breach songs. Both bands has very interesting songs. The songs are long, and have very rich textures that evolve slowly and cinematography. The first step of this journey would be to analyze some of this songs. Try to write down the most used concepts related to composition, arranging and mix/sound. Could you please start with one of these and use this table as template: (I added an example of a simple analysis) Structure /// What's happening /// Theory (chord progressions & scales) Intro Guitar playing clean arpeggios. Key: Am, Chord progression: Am - C - G Part A Drums and bass starts... Let me know if it's clear! -------------------- My lessons

Excellent! Keep on practicing those legato lessons. This one is also very efficient: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/legato-stamina/
The analysis is very precise. You used a few words to describe each part and it makes it easier to understand the overall idea. The only thing that I would add there is the minutes/seconds for each part, to be sure that we are talking about the same part, and also to see how much each part lasts and compare... Let's use this video as reference: What do you think of the analysis? Can you understand the composition clearer? -------------------- My lessons

I will come up with the time for each part in no time [Edit] Here it is: [0:00-0:53]Intro: Clean Guitar, tremolo picking between open D-string and A>Bb on G-string, opening riff with open D-String as pedal tone [0:54-1:41]Part A: Drum and Bass kicks in playing opening riff. [1:41-2:04]Part B: still open D as pedal tone playing melody on G-String [2:04-2:42]Part A [2:42-3:16]Part B [3:16-3:22]Part D: melody over D-Pedal tone: D, F, A, Bb, C, D [3:22-3:57]Part C: D power Chord into riff with D-Pedal tone again (with distortion) [3:57-4:20]Part B (with distortion) [4:20-6:20]Part A with fadeout slowing down, synth [6:20-6:44]Part C kicks in [6:44-7:10]Outro (Part D) synth fadeout This post has been edited by mad: Jun 2 2014, 09:43 PM |

Alright, here's the next one: Band: My Sleeping Karma Song: Saumya Key: D natural minor [30:36-31:16]Intro: Clean Guitar playing Pedal tone with open D string, playing repetitive melody over it (using notes on G-String: A, Bb, G, A, D, C), followed by 2 short fills with D5 chords with distorted guitar with Drum/Bass [31:16-31:47]Part A: Drum And Bass kicking in while clean guitar continues playing intro melody, second distorted guitar playing D5 [31:47-32:33]Part B: distorted guitar fades out, clean guitar playing new melodies + sitar like sound [32:33-33:03]Part C: both guitars distorted, first one playing D5, second plays melody [33:03-33:50]Part B [33:50-34:05]Part D: more synth, kinda bass solo before [34:05-36:07]Part E: clean guitar play another melody (with D-Pedal tone) over bass/drum with synth tension builds up (more drums, clean guitar gets more distorted) until [36:07-36:11]Bridge (no drums/bass, clean guitar plays melody) into [36:11-36:36]Part F: drums/bass kicking in. First guitar distorted, D5 - second guitar slightly distorted plays melody [36:36-37:07]Part C [37:07-37:22]Outro: Fadout D, synth I took this video for time reference: This is a very interesting analysis. It's cool how they keep the tension in the whole song using D as a pedal note giving this a modal feeling. In this case the mode is aeolian, but this is how modal music is usually arranged. I can say that I'm starting to see clearly their approach to composition. We are ready to a new song, what do you think? 1 more from this band, then 3 from the other and we will be ready to start. And here's a progress vid with the AP 3rds lesson by Muris.. Good job! It's evolving really good. Remember to keep your left hand and arm relaxed while you play, this will help you to make the motion smoother. -------------------- My lessons

Goo analysis mate. I think that the tune is in Am and modulates to Dm in some sections (Part B, and all the ones that has D as the pedal note). As the minor 2nd isn't used when A is the pedal note, we cannot affirm that the part is Phrygian. At the same time, when the song goes to Dm, I can feel an overall feel change in tonality. That's why I think the track has modulations.
This is a very cool track which adds new concepts to understand their music. -------------------- My lessons

and here's the first one from the Breach album.. Band: Breach Song: Valid Key: [00:00-00:15]Intro [00:15-00:37]Part A [00:37-01:34]Part B [01:34-02:03]Part C [02:03-02:10]Part D [02:10-02:25]Intro [02:25-02:40]Intro with additional riff [02:40-03:15]Part E I have no clue about the key or chords they play.. and I really don't know how I can figure that out video for time reference: Interesting track! I'm learning the chords for this one and it's tricky to understand what's happening regarding tonality. Are you able to write down the chords used at least? -------------------- My lessons

No way - I tried but gave up. How do you figure out chords for such a song? It's possible to get close, and it can be the most useful ear training even, check the first chords: Breach___Valid.gp5 ( 1.56K ) Number of downloads: 93 I start with the roots, and then try to hear each of the other notes used... -------------------- My lessons

Great job Mad, now I find this analysis clearer and more useful. The track is around Dm, and they are using chord from aeolian, phrygian, and sometimes maybe locrian and harmonic minor. This doesn't care too much, it seems that they are just looking for dark combinations of chords and that's what we have to get from this one. Remember those chord movements that you like more and how they sound.
Use this concept to create your own weird progressions around a key. Check also that they usually add some higher notes in the chords to make them sound more dissonant, this is another cool trick. Experiment with it! I think that we are ready for a new one, what do you think? -------------------- My lessons
