I have a personal request/open challenge to all GMC instructors....
GMC needs a Steely Dan lesson! I'm thinking a lesson based on a classic 'Dan solo, but I'll take any 'Dan lesson I can get! Anyone up to it? Anyone else into it? So many tasty, classic Dan solos out there!! -------------------- Check out my awesome Nintendo Cover-band, EMULATOR!! http://www.reverbnation.com/emulator Now.....go practice!! |

Steely Dan is GREAT, but you have to be in the right mood/mindset for it. I've heard plenty of people that don't dig them because it's too "smooth", etc. But if you give them a true listen (through a great stereo or headphones!) with an open mind, and some patience, it's hard not to at least appreciate the studio masterpieces they have put together. Something may sound "smooth" at first, but then when you peel back the layers of tasty, razor-sharp grooves....you get hit in the face with that nasty, funk onion!
I'm going to divide this list into 2 sections, also by album. Listen to the albums, not a greatest hits compilation, to hear the order as intended.... MY favorites: (from "The Royal Scam") Kid Charlemagne The Fez Green Earring Don't Take me Alive has a KILLER guitar riff intro!! Pretty much, give this whole album a listen. (From "Aja") Whole album!! The "Hits": Deacon Blues Peg (AMAZING solo!!) Josie Reelin' In the Years Hey Nineteen Dirty Work Black Cow Hope that helps. Hope you enjoy. If it ain't your thang, no worries....but the musicianship is AMAZING!! After all, it was the "golden age" of studio musicians, and the Dan always hired the BEST!! Check out some info on the killer musicians that helped create the legacy, such as Bernard Purdie, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Steve Gadd and Wayne Shorter!! I had never listened to them but I'm know enjoying there funky songs.. they are really good! After some time of listening I will try to work on something.. I'm currently working on getting some Steely Dan charts/pdf's from my bassist, and also a 'Dan cover band of Portland all-star players (and some more regional talent as well)
