Frederik, pivot is same as pedal tone. Tone which is repeated in the sequence of chords, notes, or group of notes. I should have used term "pedal" instead, and in future will use it, there will be few more lesson on this topic so...pedal!

Hi GMC! Let’s look at some ways of playing standard chords in unusual way. There are for parts, or groups of chords:
1. C# min7, C7-5, Bmin7, E7, Amaj7
2. Amaj7, Dmaj7, G#min7-5, C#7, F# min7, Amaj7
3. C# min7, Cdim7, Bmin7, E7, Amaj7
4. Amaj7, Dmaj7, G#min7-5, C#7, F# min7, Amaj7
Each is played with pivot note on the top, the same note for the whole chord sequence. Same system can be applied on any harmony, it creates fresh sounding harmonies, this system is used a lot in Brazilian and generally bossa nova music. Knowing lots chords shapes and positions is necessary in order to create best harmonic solutions. In first part we have F# as pivot note, in second E note, in third G#, and finally in last C#. Chords are included in diagrams, though they are not included as part of the harmony, they are just guideline!
Enjoy playing this lesson.
Regards!
