Rocking Tune - Intermediate
Hello GMC'ers and welcome to Rocking Tune - Intermediate level lesson.
As before we'll try to play some heavy sounding licks, not too complex this time but still powerful enough, to fit Rock genre.
Tempo is 130,key of Gm, scales in use are G minor, G minor pentatonic, G Blues scale and G Dorian.
Techniques involved:
-Alternate picking, use of open strings, legato, sliding , pinch harmonics, bending, tapping etc.
Rock it and ask if you need any help!

-------------------------|----------------------------|
| The lesson starts on the lower strings.
We have some sliding, hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, and one pinch harmonic.
This adds some power while playing, to the whole lesson to be precise,
as we want it to sound as heavy as possible.

-------------------------------------|---------------------------|
-------------------------------------|---------------------------|
| Now we have the open G string in use, while we are playing
an ascending line using
fretted notes on the G string as well.
Try to count this right, there are some double notes,
so don't get confused by them.
At the end we have few matching bends using the G and B strings. |

------------------------------|---------------------------------| | We follow on with another simple part.
This the same as first section, only transposed one octave higher.
The fingering and pattern is the same, even down to the pinch harmonics.

--------------------------------------------| | This section is another clone,
it's section 2 transposed one octave higher
but with a different ending -
it ends with a descending lick using an open G string
and some fretted notes,on the G string of course. |

----------------------10--11--12----------|------------------------------------|
--8g10------8g10--13----------------------|------------------------------------|
------------------------------------------|------------------------------------| | Now it's time to slow things down a bit.
Here we have lots of bends a few pull-offs,hammer-ons etc.
Pay attention to the last lick here - it's an ascending lick
made out of G blues scales.
Try to play it staccato, it should smell a bit like Gilbert. |

----------------------------------|------------------18--17--15--------|
----------------------------------|------------------------------------|
----------------------------------|------------------------------------|
----------------------------------|------------------------------------| | More bends here - the last one is a whole tone and a half.
It's actually a bend and release and this probably
seems like a natural thing to do because
we are quickly moving to another position.
Still, the idea is to perform the release as well
so be quick here as it only lasts a quarter note.
At the end here there's another lick including G blues scale.
This time it is descending, and again we play it staccato.

--13---13---13---13---13---13-|---L---13---13---13-13-13-13-13----|
------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
------------------------------|-----------------------------------| | This part starts with a few double stops and some sliding in 3rds.
Next comes a nice part, a rhythmical pattern over an Eb chord.
To understand this part better just mentally place 16th notes
in groups of 3 and only play the first in each group,
which means that you'll play one and miss the next two 16th notes.
This is a useful tool to break groove a little,
progressive Rock and Metal bands use this technique all the time.

-----------------------|------------------------------------------||
| In the last part we go back to lower notes for a little while,
then we have a bend on the B string plus a tap.
We bend a whole note, then tap on the 13th fret
to get the note that would normally be played on the 15th fret,a D note.
The final lick is a simple Gm pentatonic CAGED lick, including 2 bends. |
