- Gabriel Leopardi29th September 2009Yes I have heard some of John 5's solo albums, some VERY cool stuff for sure. I love that he uses a Tele for most of his songs. I find it gives such a unique tone and atmosphere to his work. And yes he's been a session guitarist for many people, and has even written songs for Avril Lavigne and others. I believe he is employed as a writer for WB music... but might have the company wrong but it's one of the big record labels anyways. He also toured with KD Lang for a while. A very versatile musician for sure.

I agree with you about Rob's sound. He sound more like a rock band know and that really cool.. maybe in the future he could be the new Ozzy (with all my respect to this king of metal ) is he keeps on rocking in this way. Have you checked John 5 solo albums? there is some cool stuff there. I've been reading about him and he has been part as sesionist of really cool albums.. for example the last Filter album.

We have very similar tastes in music so I guess that just means that great minds think alike As for the phrase " Brings a lot to the table" it's a metaphor really. I was basically saying that by John 5 joining Zombie he's brought a lot of new ideas, concepts, talent etc. to the band. I forget sometimes that figures of speech here in Canada/North America may not be so common else where in the world
I was a big White Zombie fan back in the day, still am, but as you pointed out the sound back then as with Rob's earlier solo stuff was a bit more Industrial. Since John 5 has joined and Rob is actually using a "band" his sound has become, for the lack of a better word, harder. I find he's a bit more in your face. Still some "techno/industrial" elements but with a much harder edge. John 5 was a big part of that I think.

Cool! Yes, he has amazing music. His last album sounds a bit more rocker than the previous which sounds more techno. Anyhow both are interesting. I also recomend you White Zombie first albums. There are lots of awesome riffs & songs there!By the way, on video 6 the tabs say that you play the third fret on the E string, but you don't do it in the video and it sounds rather wrong

Hi GMC! Welcome to my new lesson! Today we have a composition based on the style of the talented artist called "Rob Zombie".
Music style & influences:
Rob is an amazing musician, singer and horror films director. His music style always has “horror films” vibes and this lesson I tried to recreate it. Rob's music is like a continuation of his previous band called “White Zombie”. This band has a very particular sound thanks to the combination of Thrash/Groove metal, New metal, Techno & Industrial music. Songs like “More Human Than Human” and “Super-Charger Heaven” defined perfectly his style in the 90’s. In his solo albums he continued developing that style. I based on “Educated Horses”, his last solo album, to compose this tune. I chose that album because is more rocker than electronic and the guitars have been recorded by John 5 who played with Marylyn Manson and is one of the most interesting modern metal players. His “demonic” guitar style fits perfect with Rob Zombies music.
Structure:
This lesson is a good lesson for beginners because it’s very easy technically. It starts with a dropped D repetitive riff. Then the main guitar plays some octave chords and two strings bending which are very used ideas by White Zombie, Rob Zombie and John 5. Then we have a “banjo” part that is played in unison by the electric guitar and a banjo. Finally you’ll find a melody very inspired in “horror” played by harmonized guitars.
Virtual Instruments & arrangement:
I added some Reason Virtual Instruments to the rock quartet to make this sound a bit more similar to Rob’s music. You’ll hear a drum loop in the beginning created with the Redrum (Tecno kit). I also added a synth from the “Thör” module in this part. Then I added a Banjo with the “NNTX” module that plays unison with the guitar.
Techniques:
The level of this lesson is from beginners to intermediate and the techniques used are palm muting, bending, vibrato, alternate picking and legato.
Tuning:
I use “Dropped D” tuning as John 5 in many of his songs. He also uses Dropped C.
Scales & tonality:
The composition is in D minor. The main idea in this music is to generate “tension” all the time so you will find more repetitive riffs than “commercial” chord progressions. This makes everything sound a bit like “modal” like Techno music. The scales used are D pentatonic minor and D Phrygian.
