Everyone else's fingers...

...seem to fly all over the place πŸ’Έ Yet I am stuck playing in one single position! How can I unlock the fretboard?

Reality check

On the web, expressions like "master" or "unlocking" the fretboard have often been used to sell scam guitar courses. It is easy, or should we say tempting, to think that there is one single trick that will allow your fingers to fly all over the fretboard. In reality it is a combination of knowing the adjacent scale boxes well, mastering at least one position-shifting technique (such as sliding ) - and most importantly: having something to play which actually stretches all over the fretboard. A shortcut here would be to repeat the same lick / pattern in each position.

There is good news

We absolutely love playing all over the fretboard at GMC. In fact - more often than not you will see us shifting positions when soloing. So we suggest you first learn a solo which actually uses position shifts. Once mastered - you will be able to analyse which scale positions were used, and reverse-engineer your way to understanding how you can play all over the fretboard using your favorite licks and techniques. We believe guitarists should not be clones.

It might sound like we are trying to complicate things here, but from our experience the shortcuts seldom work. And if they do, they will turn you into a one trick pony at best 🐴

So let's explore the fretboard

We suggest you dive straight into a player friendly solo and pay a little extra attention to those scale diagrams.

Here is a tip

The students that learn fastest, use the REC functionality to post on the REC board. A minimum of three instructors will then grade your performance and provide you with constructive feedback. So if you are serious about learning fast, give yourself a deadline to submit your take for REC grading. I can promise you this will give you the sense of direction you need, and motivation to practice! (REC requires you to sign up for GMC)
