How To Produce This Sound With My Epiphone Les Paul

I have an Epiphone Les Paul with humbucker pickups. I'd like to be able to produce the same sound like this great guitarist on the following You Tube link:

When I play the open D string it keeps on ringing when I play other notes on higher strings so the music comes out blurry but if I apply palm muting then the D note of the open string becomes "staccato", not so nice either. Can you explain further what you did to create sounds like that:

1. Did you use any muting techniques in the lesson?
2. What kind of effects did you use, what effect box and how the settings were set

How To Play This 1-octave Higher Note ?

I can't reproduce 1-octave higher sound of the note in video # 7 of the following lesson which I think the instructor refers to as "harmful" note
